Harvey Norman Faulty Laptop

Hi there. I bought an Asus laptop from Harvey Norman on the 27th of July last year. In March of this year it wouldn't turn on and when I returned it they had to replace the motherboard.

Yesterday, less than 2 weeks outside thier 1 year warranty it seems as though the fault is back. I know that under consumer law I'm entitled to a repair regardless of what they will claim about a 1 year warranty but could I claim a refund instead?

I don't want them replacing the motherboard again only for it to break in another 6 months time.

Probably need to allow them offer to repair it once more and then I'd push for a refund if still faulty but you'll need to start a claim in the small claims court to get them to take you seriously

They most certainly will pull the out of warranty bla bla bull, small claims will definitely get a result often before it even goes to court, im talking from experience with HN. Best of luck

Thanks for the replies. When I brought it in today they told me that the manufacturer warranty wasn't up until the end of August so they are sending it back for another repair.

Going by Nigzcurrans advice I didn't argue with them and just let them repair it. Hopefully it will last more than 6 months this time.

    Quick update:

The laptop came back on Friday with a new motherboard. I turned it on yesterday morning and within 30 minutes it just died again without warning.

Returned to Harvey Norman today. They were only willing to do another repair. I told the manager that this was unacceptable to me and that I was only willing to accept a replacement or refund. He refused so it's off to the small claims cout now.

Get a final formal complaint in writing and send it to them before going to small claims.

I can't believe 3 main boards failed in a year and you weren't offered a different remedy.

We are going to have to bring in laws that severely punish businesses for not fulfilling their legal obligations, the piss has been taken for far too long.

Many years ago HN insisted on my mobile number and said the guarantee was not valid unless I gave it.

Duty manager called over and claimed the same - he said it was the only way they could know if I bought it from them.

I declined the purchase and never have bought since. They did change the policy soon after, but putting a defence up even before you paid for an item told me to avoid them.

Power supply could be the culprit

Make sure to get a laptop from them that you can use while yours is being repaired.

this is a good result for you. any repair must be permananent. theirs was not. you can now insist on one of the other 2 r's

Replace refund. if they refuse you have a cast iron SCC case.
