Re-hanging a gate

I have inherited this badly Installed electric swinging gate. I am thinking can I take it apart and reposition it on the corner of the pier and just use it as a manual gate? What do people think? At the minute it can only swing outward 90 degrees which is awkward.

Those gates were supposed to swing inwards. Because of its position relative to the piers it'll still only be 90 degrees though. Will this help your case I wonder? Perhaps worth getting the local automatic gates installer a try.

I'm trying to just abandon the electric gate part. So would disconnect at the bottom I was thinking and just reattach on corner of Pier and just use them as manual non electric gates. Is this viable?

and ask them if you just cut/remove the cam shown in the picture will it open and close manually

The gate drive motor usually has a disconnect feature where it attaches to the underside of the gate , there is a key for releasing it , it could be corroded on your gate . If it is and you are are sure you will not be using the motor again ,why not just disconnect it and remove the linkage and leave the gate free to pivot in its current position?

That will work.

The gates will still have the appearance of being automated which is something of a security device in itself.

Are you 100% sure you don't want automated gates ? They provide great peace of mind.

They are already manual now because they were very badly installed and don't work anymore. As you can see we are on a slope so rainwater just flows into the motor so they died recently.

If the motor box isn't tanked right the water gets in and that's it.

You could always go for rams if u change your mind.

Is the top bracket not embedded in the pillar? How were you proposing you remove it and rehang it?

The type of opener in the link rather than the buried ones you have.

But I don't think it's going to work for you if you can't open in.

If you are going manual you can get rising hinges for gates that open up a slope.

I don't know if they can be paired with electric openers though. You could ask a professional installer.

Another option could be an electric sliding gate.

Ok, well you'd have to cut that bracket off and get a new one fitted that would bolt on like the one at the bottom.

You could then rehang the gates higher to clear the slope opening inwards too.

If you are happy to go manual and want a simple solution a local fabricator should easily be able to make hinges to re-hang your gates on the corner and engineer them to open out to meet the walls on either side. It may be a case of getting another local handy man or builder to dismantle your old ones and re-hang using your new hinges or have a go at it yourself.

I think they would look odd though myself hung on the corner but would be very practical. Effectively an inch or so outside the line of the gate pillar on the outside nearest the road.

Personally I'd look for a solution to open them inward on a rising hinge. But then I don't know how much space you have in the drive to get around the gate with a car or how steep the rise is.

All the wiring is there so automating them at a later date would be possible.

You look to be in the countryside ask around even a local farmer they will point you to the right person to fabricate the hinges.

I might be wrong but it looks backwards . Gates should open inwards and the sensor should be on the outside of the gate . Unless there are a double set of sensors on the outside I would imagine they are a safety issue . No expert here . Just used of fixing my own then wires get corroded .

It would be better if you rehang on the back/uphill corner and open it inwards.

You can off-set the bottom hinge so the gate tilts up to clear the higher ground. If it's offset at the correct angle the gate will be upright when open.

Is the release in the top picture what you mean? And usually does that disconnect the gate completely from the motor in normal circumstances because here in the bottom picture it appears to be welded on.

Complete pain in the hole to move them, if it's your first rodeo forget it.

Gates not galvanized and rusting, they will break your heart sanding and painting.

Would a galvanized gate stay rust free after 10 years zero maintenance which is what I reckon these gates got.

OP Example of rising hinges in Link below. The Ebay ones look like they would allow the gates to open inward and maybe at more than 90 degrees. The gates would still look aesthetically correct in between the pillars.

This is an affordable and quick solution to your you initial question. There is obviously the cost of getting someone to fit them if this is not in your wheel house.

They can be automated at a later date with a Ram type system. Or a complete change to a sliding system as others have suggested.

Those are fine, but they are limited to a set rise. The example given is a 10ft long gate will rise 9ins. But it doesn't allow for different pitches between the top and bottom hinge. In the example the pitch is fixed at 1mtr. The shorter the pitch the greater the rise, and vice versa.

Thats it yes. one part is welded to the gate and the bottom is connected to the motor linkage both share the pivot point . it is to allow the gate to be opened in the event of a power cut or fault.

As others have said a sliding gate is the best for reliability .You could even have your existing gates blasted and dipped and remounted on a sliding rail . Sure there is a bit of work in it but nothing a competent fabricator couldn't handle .

Get something under the end where it's connected to the motor spindle and see can you lever it off, but going by your questions so far you'd be well advised contacting a professional.
