Bivacor Artificial Heart Implanted in a Patient

Although mentioned in the pig heart transplant thread, I think it more appropriate this have it's own thread.

An Australian bio-engineer has spent many years developing a new type of mechanical human heart and this appears to have caused significant interest because it's unique feature set imbues it with many positive characteristics compared to previous attempts at artificial hearts. The most significant feature is that it has a single moving component with no mechanical wear whatsoever as the impeller is magnetically levitated. It doesn't even have valves.

It is small enough to fit in the chest of a child, yet powerful enough to supply enough blood flow to accomodate an adult male exercising. Being made of titanium there should be no bio-compatibility problems and animal trials suggest it might even prove to be feasible to do away with immuno-suppressants in some cases.

This device, the Bivacor artificial heart, has now been implanted in a human patient:

I hope all goes well for the patient. It must take significant courage to agree to be the first, when the history of artificial hearts has been so discouraging.
