There was a good bit of discussion on the county council forum page so thought I’d set this up seeing as things have begun to move in FG this week and in FF which to me would indicate it will be sooner rather than later.

Who will the runners and riders be? For FG Feighan surely will be on the ticket but Walsh and Perry are looking for the nod too. Could be risky running Walsh so close to Sligo with Feighan but anyway FG will hold a seat.

For FF they seem to be in bother with Marc McSharry not running. Cousin Edel will probably be on the ticket due to gender quota but will she get enough out the country area to stay ahead of a second FF candidate if they go with one?

I assume Nessa Cosgrave will run for Labour but will not feature.

Gets interesting for SF then. Kenny is a certainty to be re-elected but they might be spooked with the poor performance in Sligo Council elections. Getting 1000 votes between 3 in Ballymote-Tubber and not gaining anything in the other two might make them reluctant to run a second, yet what about McManus. He is now without political office and might try and muscle his way in?

What about the rest then? A quick google tells me that Harkin turns 71 this year. Surely she’s reached the peak of her career at this stage but she may see it as a handy run for Independents and with Marc McSharry not running she might fancy it. Bree, Gino O’Boyle will make an appearance I’m sure but with little chance of success.

Anyway looking forward to all the declarations and debates between now and whenever it comes.
If you look at it from a geographic perspective 3 TDs reside in Sligo town at present with Kenny in Leitrim. Can Sligo town say it’s any better off from its over representation relative to population?
