    hi folks

driving today and noticed some smoke coming from the exhaust of my 131 reg nissan qashqai, seemed to happen most when accelerating, had a look at the engine and noticed the turbo air intake pipe (i think thats what it is) seemed kind of loose and had a bit of oil around it, im thinking this is the cause and the pipe is worn and needs replacing, cant get to a mechanic til tuesday, would the car be ok to drive as it is now, short enough journeys, no more then half hour at a time, thanks.

Judging by the photo it's a 1.5Dci? Common part to go on them, very common. It's called a charge pipe and the whole assembly will need to be replaced, from where the Jubilee clamp at the bottom of the photo, up to where you see oil on the pipe where it meets the anti shudder valve.

It's probably split where you see the dry section meet the oily section closest to you.

turbo charge pipe (goes from intercooler to engine air intake). Boost pipe is turbo outlet to intercooler. Turbo inlet pipe is at the very start of the system, if you follow your air filter box down the back of the engine it connects to your turbo inlet.

Should be okay to drive gently, I'd imagine you're having some boost issues also, down on power?

Easy to remove and replace yourself, here's a video. He calls it a boost pipe but it's not, it's a charge pipe, sorry to be pedantic 😂

cheers man, yep its a 1.5dci, actually looks handy enough to replace alright, do you reckon the car will be ok to drive fore a few days til i get the part, thanks

Should be grand yeah just try not to drive hard, slight chance of sucking something in through that split and then it'll be straight into the engine.

If you have any strong tape like gorilla tape clean off the area and tape it up just to be safe

On the same topic I get a bit of smoke when starting my 09 Qashqai when cold. I haven't noticed any smoke while driving. Would this be normal or something I should see a mechanic about? Just for the record I have little or no knowledge of the workings of cars.

Hard to say over the Internet, what colour is that smoke? Could be bad glow plugs causing poor combustion when cold and unburnt diesel going through the exhaust which would be white smoke. Engine warms up and smoke stops because the cylinders are up to temp and glow plugs aren't needed.

Black smoke. Just lasts for a second or two after the engine starts.

Try giving it an Italian tune up first. Red line it in first and second gear a few times

Not when the engine is cold! Wait until it's fully warmed up!

Personally I would avoid driving it if possible as engine with that pipe damage is creating black smoke that will block your dpf
