    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a Renault Zoe, 2018 at the oldest, are they good cars, will it have re sale value in a years time?

    I do low mileage.

They are great cars with some important limitations.

Some have a battery lease that needs to be paid every month forever which can devalue the car. You can buy this out.

Faster CCS charging was an option on later cats giving around 45kW charging speed, ost are 22kW Max which is the slowest around compared to nearly all other EVs. This is an issue on longer trips outside home charger range, invoking 1+ hour stops versus 45 minutes on other cars.

There are various battery sizes, bigger means more range, range at high speed can be quite low. Modern EVs have 60+kWh batteries giving better ranges. Cars with less than 60+kWh are a bit obsolete and in my opinion only good as a second car in a 2 car household.

Maybe post up a link to an actual done deal ad you are considering as an example.

Other things to consider, do you own your own home with off street parking so are likely to be able to home charge? What is your daily commute round trip in km? What is your typical long weekend trip round trip in km say to visit friends or a weekend away etc?

Public charging when outside home charger range is main downside of EVs involving charging stops and risk of queues at chargers. Getting a big battery and CCS faster charging helps.

What car do you drive today.

They seem to be holding there value well (in comparison to a comparable Nissan leaf )

Wether that's true in a year or so is anyone's guess, all the main dealers are getting rid of the last of their stock of new and nearly new Zoe's , ( as they've been replaced by a new Renault 5) so the new price is quite low at the moment, I assume the newer you go the better a bargain you get ,

    Check its safety rating

The ZOE received some worthwhile updates in 2019, probably best to get one of these if you’re getting one. NCAP history is concerning.

Never mind this poster. The Zoe is as safe as any other car or vehicle on the roads with a human driver. It's all the new cars with electronic aids and touch screens that are less safe and have the potential to become less safer still if one of these aids were to fail and the driver has become so Reliant on it.

Exactly. Structurally it's no different than any other other small car in its class.

Is it really….they removed head airbags from 2019 model

Yes it is. Maybe there research from crashes found out that thd head airbags were very rarely if ever used. I am sure they had there reasons. Either way it was not that that gave it its last NCAP star rating it was the lack of electronic safety aids which is just stupid. It is as structural safe as any car in its class and some from the class above too.

It did seem to go down the ranking pretty quickly, from a 5 star when originally launched , in 2013, to 2021 0 stars - the testing bar was raised.. and the 2021 Zoe didn't have some of the new active safety features ,now required in the more recent audit, but still would have expected it to hit a 3 or 4 , the removal of the curtain airbags seems to have been the main cause - as well as increased structural requirements

I suspect their reasons for removing airbags were cost cutting, there’s no other plausible explanation.
