Pea crop being attacked

have just started to harvest my peas which I have supported with strung sheep wire. Mature pods at/near ground level are being attacked. The Culpit - whatever it is - is only interested in the peas. They knaw at the pod enough to expose the peas. The pod is left substantially intact with all the peas gone. There might be one left at either end. The edge of the openings in the pod look as if they were grated. They must have an ability to ‘suck out’ some of the peas because a large part of the pod is intact but the peas are gone. Could it be mice , young pheasants , rabbits or what.
