I have been told by my doctor this evening that I can’t fly due to illness. I can’t get through to the travel agent as it’s after hours. I can’t get through to my travel insurance company. What do I do to get my money back?!

No hurry! Focus for the minute on getting better, there’s no rush to get back money already paid.

What you need to do first is get online, when you are up to it, get form from your insurance company. This will need to be printed out. You will need to fill it in as directed and there will be a section for your doctor to fill in, the doctor who declared you unfit or your own GP when s/he is updated.

Bear in mind if medical condition started before you booked the holiday, it will be subject to the scrutiny of fitness to travel at tune of booking. This applies to all claims.

I’ve done all this several times over the decades, sometimes they pay out over the excess, sometimes they hold back on various items according to clauses in the small print.

All this will not become over the phone, but mostly online, standard procedure. You will need receipt images from booking, proof of booking, notice of cancellation from travel agent plus of course the printed form signed by doctor.
