Interesting discussion on BBC Radio Ulster's Talkback programme yesterday re geo blocking of RTE News programmes on RTE 1 via Freeview in N. Ireland. This was according to RTE due to EBU directive concerning the broadcasting of the Olympics whereby BBC along with Discovery have the UK rights. Seemingly the same geo blocking happened with the last Olympics.. BBC Radio Ulster News reported last night that RTE had relented after complaints and would no longer geo block their news programmes via Freeview. Unsure if these were geo blocked via Sky for N. Ireland subscribers.

    2 interesting points:

    1. RTE News often have clips of sporting events where BBC hold sole UK rights. So why geo block now?
    2. Total lack of knowlege in the discussion re availability of RTE via Saorview in N. Ireland. One caller told the programme she could watch RTE's Olympics coverage on Ch.802 (Saorview) although it was geo blocked on Ch. 55 (Freeview) and the presenter couldn't understand this. One of the discussion panel even stated that RTE via Freeview was analogue and via Saorview was digital and that his Saorview box had unreliable reception.
