Does anyone here still play the console? Any favourite games or memories? Do you prefer the original controller or the S controller?

I recently took my Xbox out of storage and I am considering whether to buy a Xedusa+ from Behar Bros to use the console with a HDMI cable. Have the urge to play through GTA and Splinter Cell games.

I do.Have it modded with 128MB ram, Noctua fan,Ssd,Xblast chip with Cerbios. As for hdmi im using either Shepherd HDMi or Retrotink 4k.

I wouldnt bother with xedusa as its little worse than Shepherd or more expensive.

You can still play online with Insignia.A lot of people playing Halo.

Due to the difference in postage costs, the Xbox2hdmi cable would probably end up costing more. I did buy an Akura from Behar Bros for the Dreamcast. It's a good device but a bit flimsy on the whole.

I have a handful of original xboxes, and a pouch full of discs.

I mostly emulate it now, but the games i always go back to are:

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Need for Speed: Underground (i prefer the 1st)

    Midtown Madness

    Grabbed by the Ghoulies

I never hear people talk about GbtG. It's a great game, or at least i think so. Maybe my taste is just bad!! I have good memories of it anyway, as it was one of the first games i played on the xbox.

Also, the S controller only. The original is a monstrosity and was rightfully ditched and redesigned!! :)

I haven't played my OG Xbox in a long time

The games have really dated, more so than the PS2, probably because of the lack of development in Japan.

The games all tried really hard to be 3D and "now" but that was in 2002, and it isn't a good look some 22 years on.

That said, try Mech Assault games are pretty good, and there's that game that broke my Xbox that Retr0 brought to mine

It's the first console I remember that had a softmod option rather than needing a modchip. Funnily enough I used it as more of an emulation machine at that point than one for pirating actual Xbox games.

Never did quite gel with it as a console. In fact I threw my last Xbox out when I moved house a few years ago. Was only really holding onto it for Panzer Dragoon Orta and Steel Battalion. (unfortunately had to sell off Battalion years back!)

I kinda like it. I fell away from gaming during the rise of the 6th gen machines, so by the time I spent any time with those games years later, I'd no real nostalgia for the Xbox/PS2/GC...so went in a little blind. The Xbox has some nice games on it, obviously nowhere near as many as the PS2, but I do enjoy spinning it up every now and then.

Yeah the 6th gen was my great migration from consoles too. I actually got quite into PC gaming at that point and the poor old PS2 was only really used for messing about in Vice City when I had mates over for cans. 😂

I do remember a summer in college though where everyone in the house got ridiculously good at Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. Spent the summer beating the shite out of each other. Was great.

Was it yourself that I sold Steel Battalion to? Trying to remember where that went! As much as I'm not a big fan of the Xbox, it sure did bring us potentially the most outlandish controller of all time.

I did own the Steel Batallion setup at one point, but no idea where I bought it and who I later sold it to 🤷 Great setup, bloody enormous and impractical though

    "Enormous and impractical"

Isn't that the tagline of the "Arcade & Retro" forum?? 😁

Enormous & Impractical - A tale of insanity, debt, clutter & hoarding

^^ That was the name that James Cameron pitched when he was mulling over the idea of making a feature on this forum…

A tale of those we've lost, those who survived, the pain, suffering, buying, sniping and picking over the carcasses of former friends, for the sake of a unboxed copy of Conker 64.

    A sure fire hit

There was some good stuff on the original Xbox. Most of it came from Sega but definitely a few games worth playing on it. I also ended up buying a lot of multiplatform games for it as it was usually better than the PS2. There were also quite a lot of PC games on the system available no where else.

There's just enough on it to make it worth having although I was watching one of the recent DF retros and apparently a lot of them are failing now.

And that game that killed Cidermans Xbox was metal wolf chaos but your Xbox just wasn't American enough to handle it. It's since been released on everything thanks for devolver digital.

There's a capacitor on particular revisions of the console that looks after the internal clock on the machine that are prone to failure and leakage. You can thankfully remove it to stop it happening.

Forum never did fully recover after the Vanilla update did it? 😥

I wonder is Brownfinger's finger still brown. Or does he just go by 'Cleanfinger' now?

Does PBHBP still have a Micra & a GameBoy collection?? Does Atavan still belt out a Miley Cirus special at 4am? Is the Greek Mother still able to 1cc Aliens?

There's so many questions we'll probably never know the answer to. Thanks Vanilla….you piece of absolute crap.

I thought this was interesting about how awful Halo 2 looks because they had to change the lighting model for the final release. When he places the models is an area with the intended lighting model it's kind of transformative:
