The IMHO side of Current Affairs/ IMHO

Just seen another thread in CA/IMHO closed because it wasn't a current affair, had a look at the forum charter and it says:

Have an opinion on a less-than-stellar topic? Want a discussion of the great questions of our time? Have a deep thought that's not quite lighthearted enough for After Hours? But not debate-worthy enough for the Politics Forum?

Current Affairs/IMHO is a forum where users discuss these topics, within, of course, the bounds of civil discourse. Wait, wouldn’t that make every discussion on topic? Whoa, hold on a second, we need to sit down; we just blew our own minds.

I think that's fine, but it doesn't seem to be what the mods are going by

Just saw another thread locked because it wasn't a current affair.

    Any thoughts on this, anyone?

It's their sandpit: the rest of us play here by grace and favour of the site owners, administration and mods.

They don't have to be fair or consistent or follow their own rules. It helps, if they want to maintain readership. But is strictly optional.

Closing threads, without a solid reason, in CA really does seem counter productive.

If this is about the thinly veiled 'Conor McGregor vs rugby players' thread - there's another one open on the same topic already, as the OP of that thread was advised to do (as it happens another poster set it up anyways).

And just FYI, I got no PM on this whatsoever.

I opened this thread 5 months ago, that thread closure did prompt me to bump it today, but it's not specifically about it.

There's already a thread to discuss the Conor McGregor case, there's no need to duplicate discussion in a second thread. The only reason that thread was opened was to have a snipe and a gripe about alleged 'bias in the media'. OP was advised to open a thread that didn't draw comparisons. Another poster did just that, and it remains open so the two topics can be discussed.

Can't speak for your own thread, I wasn't a mod of CA 5 months ago.

It wasn't a thread of mine that was locked, can't remember what it was probably a general discussion on some issue that was deemed not to be a 'current affair' at the time.

    Here's another one just yesterday:

Yea, I thought the Mirror Bacteria one was overkill too. The OP did describe the topic as "fictional" which the Mod used to justify closing but I think the OP's choice of that word was poor, I don't think its fictional (as in a made up story) so much as reporting on scientific research that seems to be exploring the possibilities of that research.

The article referenced was from a mainstream newspaper, by their science editor reporting on a paper in a major peer reviewed scientific journal warning of the risks of what such research might lead to. How is that not current affairs?

Wouldn't the mirror bacteria thread be better suited in the science forum?

In theory, yes. However, that forum is dead. I agree with the thread being closed since the OP just dumped a link and there wasn't really much to discuss.

I'd settle for any part of the forum even being semi-readable.

    Bouncy glitched mess.

Possibly, but it's not about that thread, or any thread in particular.

Can't remember what prompted me to open this thread but I went back 6 months in CA/IMHO and looked at threads that were closed because they weren't current affairs, a quick look found one on nuclear energy that could have been left open, and one on bank holidays which might have been more After Hours material, but there was no particular need to lock it, IMHO

Thank you! You're absolutely right about my poor choice of the word "fictional." I'm not sure why I used it, but I realized I was just reiterating after a reply on my post that mentioned the word. While there might not be much to discuss on the topic, yet, I thought it was worth bringing up under current affairs since I've seen mirror bacteria mentioned in the mainstream science news at least a couple of times recently. I was curious whether this is an imminent threat or if we have more time—perhaps a decade or so—to consider its implications, and what others think of it. Are we more prepared now considering how the world has faced a pandemic just recently COVID( just an example) and have we learnt enough to prepare in case
