Recommend an Impact Driver

Hi Folks,

Looking to pick up an impact driver in the next few days as I need to start lifting some flooring on the second floor as I want to install some insulation between the joists. After that I will be looking to put some more flooring in the attic.

When I did the first half of the attic I was using a drill from Lidl and it made the job way more difficult than it should have been.

I was thinking Einhell as I like the options of the interchange batteries between all their different tools and could definitely see myself adding more as I go.

Thanks Listermint, I actually have that one in my bag from this morning. I like the DeWalt tools and seem to be plenty of ok offers on them.

for the price difference the dewalt is much better purchase. Weight, the size specifically the short face and power. I'd pay the extra. You'll have the dewalt for years

I'm quite a fan of the dewalt impact driver. Keep in mind batteries are expensive, you might be better off getting the set, like that's an extra 80-90 euro but you get 2 batteries (worth maybe 50 eur x2) charger (30 eur), drill (90 eur) and the case (whatever that's worth to you)

That particular one is a half inch drive too so not ideal for screw tips. Go the dewalt. Can’t go wrong.

These ones have a brushed motor don't they? I was led to believe brush less was the way to go?

I have this one and no complaints, it's home diy and already pricey as is.

That said if you have other dewalt batteries or chargers spare, the bruhless bare unit will work for you.

Or if you don't care for the drill.

Of course keep in mind the 18v vs 20v

I've no DeWalt batteries so I'll be starting fresh. I've some older mixed brand tools there but will be looking to replace them over the next 12-18 months with something better and that will last years.

I may potentially be able to get the vat back on whatever I order.

Brushless doesn't make any difference for a DIY driver. Brushes are replaceable and take years to wear out even in professional daily use. There's supposedly a marginal power efficiency advantage, but again not important for this application.

Yea EPT are a great supplier in Carlow. They've been around years and I know lots of people who've bought tools off them for their farms and businesses.

Piggybacking on this thread to ask if there are any impact drivers on the DIY market with a 3/4" drive? I have a set of 1.5" old fashioned rusty lugnuts to remove, and the ideal socket would need a 3/4" drive.

If not, would the benefit of the impact overwhelm any loss of power/stability from putting a 1/2" → 3/4" adaptor between the drive and the nut?

Don't go the other way around, you can get an adapter from 1/4" hex to 3/4" but they invariably snap.

Certainly no problem doing the job I wanted it to do which was remove rusted suspension bolts.

If you have a compressor then a 3/4" air impact gun would be the cheapest option https://www.amazon.fr/Draper-83964-Impact-Wrench-Square/dp/B07X4JHYVR/ a 3/4" DeWalt or other big brand would be much more expensive.

Easy enough to find a 1/2" to 3/4" adaptor https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B09R2B456K/ but a full 1/2" set of sockets sockets aren't very expensive.

Thats great. I just wanted to make people aware that the best price is not always the best deal. There is at least one Irish company that has been posted about on Boards that has great bargains but never any stock.

Don't have one at the moment, but I've been making a list of Good Reasons to find space for one in my life/shed. I doubt I would ever need the portability of a battery powered impact driver.

I wouldn't be without one but my main uses are for pumping up car, lawn tractor and wheel barrow tyres plus cleaning dust out of computers and other equipment.

Just double check the air requirements of any air gun you get if you want to use it full wack. With a lesser compressor you'll be waiting for the cylinder to charge back up but it will still all work.
