I wrote a piece on this but am exploring this whole area.

I don't reject it just asking some questions.

    I have been called a T. U. R. F.

I don't make money off clicks. I'm just looking for a genuine debate.

    I think it's TERF

It needs editing which I will get to later. I welcome any criticism

Love how you misspell terf, talk about establishing credibility from the word go

Shít. I misread it. Thought it said "The trains movement".

We have 40 threads on people self scaring the píss out of themselves about trans people they don't know or will never meet.

But we haven't one on Trains!

    Booo!

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

Id hope they'd read the piece because just shutting down debate is part of the problem with the trans movement.

I'm not denying trans identity just some aspects of it and I generally approach it from the science side

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

    Duplicate text

Maybe write a better article and it'll be read more?

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

Any specific criticism. I thought I made a few good points

    Executive Summary would help.

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

The whole araa of autogynephilia was shut down as a topic debate by the trans movement.

There was a sustained and irrational cancelling of Michael Bailey for separating these people out

    Bailey is no trans phobic

Another trans bashing thread, just what this forum needs. 🙄

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

Whatever you do don't actually read the piece. But comment away. It's balanced enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,093 ✭✭✭volchitsa

Not sure how long this thread will last, but I've just read your article because of it, so there's that.

TBH, despite agreeing with your main idea, the article seems a bit mixed up to me.

For example the bit about intersex seems confused. People with disorders of sexual development are always one of the two sexes, it's just that because of their genital abnormalities it can be hard to know which one they are from external observation. But they really have no link with transgender ideology, and many of them object strongly to trans activists using them as a sort of alibi to try to claim that sex is a spectrum.

Uncivil to the President (24 hour forum ban)

I'll talk about Trains if you want.

One of my favs - The Mercury

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,373 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

    Balanced. Sure.

Children need to know that the vast majority of people who feel trapped in a wrong body will simply become gay and that occasionally people might be persuaded to transition to simply avoid homophbia.

It also seems a lot of liberals are just tacking on the trans movement to other causes without question. Perhaps having missed the LGB early days or not marched with Martin Luther king they don’t want to miss this fight.

To Martin Luther bit not balanced I accept. But the truth is the majority of trans kids will turn out to be gay and homophbia is a factor in some trans decisions. Pretty solid research in that araa. I would not have made the statement otherwise

You lost me at "trans movement"

That says all I need to know.

    is this a turf train?

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

Research shows that some 80% of children with “gender dysphoria” eventually come to terms with their sex without surgical or pharmaceutical intervention. Multiple studies have found that most kids who are confused or distressed about their sex end up realizing they're gay—nearly two-thirds in a 2021 study of boys.14 Dec 2023

Sensitive people here. Nobody has a problem with the civil rights movement but with the phrase trans movements?

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

My apologies I have been called a terf

I only heard the phrase recently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,025 ✭✭✭Mike Murdock

@Bobtheman I get that this is an opinion piece, but you should add in third-party quotes and/or evidence to strengthen your argument. Stating "Google" something in a piece such as this will not help change people's opinions that it is written by a crank.

Which is what you're seeing in responses here.

Good points. I plan to add them at the end. I find pieces interrupted by quotes etc hard to finish. I will take care of it later.

No issue with the feminist or civil rights movement so?

Odd response from someone who welcomes any criticism.

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

I have to go. By the time I come back the thread will probably be gone. I will be adding links to research on the piece.

I also want to address the whole issue of gender as a concept. I don't believe it can ever be just a concept. It has some sex basis. Biology.

I'm also amused how people rush to gender silo themselves. We all have male and some female traits these days. Look at modern parenting for example.

    Anyway adieu

If you're not sure about how to use an apostrophe you should leave it out altogether.

You seem to be addressing the question as an educational matter. The last two lines seem to imply that there are classes and textbooks that address issues of gender and the 'trans movement.' If this is the case you absolutely need to make specific reference to these textbooks. What are the books called? What exactly are they saying? You need quotes and evidence all the way through your article or it just reads like a lot of half@rsed bluster.

If you can't find quotes and evidence then you need to consider the possibility that it's just a lot of half@rsed bluster.

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

I wrote the piece. I had heard the term TERF but only in passing. I don't really see it's relevance to the article as its a silo term. Trying to box people in

It's not a spam thread if you read the piece which I doubt you did - you'd see that. Everything I wrote is based on fact.

The psychological sciences need to have a warning label around them

If you read books try "drop the disorder" by Jo Watson.

She makes a good case for the over use of psychology

The trans movement has psychological aspects. No problem with that but psychology ain't a hard science

Plus until the movement realises and accepts the difference between a biological female and a trans female it will always be questioned

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Bobtheman

Good points but everything I wrote is based on fact. I just have to add them in

I checked before I wrote extensively.

I'm just astounded the whole thing has gone this far and women are being told at rallies to stop talking about vaginas.

Geez what a pile of toss. Firstly there's no "trans movement", there is a transgender rights movement and has been since the 60s.

Secondly, you equate sexual acts with being gay in your article. Does that mean that any sexual orientation or gender identification isn't relevant until someone has sex?

Thirdly, your article is anti-trans. You made no effort to speak to anyone in trans community for your article. Why not? It would be like me writing article saying Mayo is shite without ever having visited the place.
