I am looking for a car to sleep in at night when camping . Need a flat base when seats are down and some head space to sit up.

My budget is 20K and I dont want a van or a very large car . Maybe an estate with headspace ?

    Any suggestions ?

Hyundai i40 estate. Skoda superb estate. There are a few options. Id swear by the i40 in terms of value for money.

What height are you? I'm 6 ft and fit in my the back of a 5 series estate.

Things to watch out for are the catches on the side for the seats (very painful if you back into them) and any kind of tie down points that are not recessed and under a flap (they'll damage your inflatable sleeping mat). I've bitter experience of both :(

I like an estate with no lip at the back...gives you an extra couple of inches if you leave the boot open and make a shelter under it.

One of the problems with car camping is cold at night and no way to cook or make tea/coffee, unless you lug gas around which is not ideal.

V2L solves this with up to 3Kw of power straight off the car to any kitchen appliance, you will hardly notice any drop in battery also.

Climate control of the car at night is also trivial with no engine to have to leave running.

    Watch this

    consider this MG5 EXCITE 2022 (EV)61KW

though you would have to confirm its V2L capabilities

I have camped in tents and a car can't be much colder !!! Am looking at the Hyundai Touran at present as seats go down flat and there may be a sleep unit designed for it

A good sleeping bag and mat will solve that problem 😁

I totally agree. I have slept soundly all night in a van without heating in below zero temperatures and not been cold because I had a decent sleeping bag. I've been colder in Ireland in summertime with crappy equipment.

For me, the best car that you need is the VW Golf estate/wagon, one of the most popular camper conversions, it folds flat and headspace when seats are down.

ended up buying a 7 seater VW touran. Loads of head and leg space in back and plan to attahc a tent to the back .

….gotten cold with a 4 season bag, upgraded to a down bag, might be worth considering for cold weather, cheap one in mountain warehouse looks fine, got a rab myself…..
