Carhire at Bordeaux Airport...suggestions? experiences?

don't hire cars too often but know to be cautious/careful…never so much as scratched anything I've hired but experiences have varied on the day from fab rapid service to outrageous sneaky ripoff. last time to hire abroad was 2017

will soon be faced with hiring something for 1 week out of Bordeaux Airport. need a normal small manual yoke for 3x like a Polo, Fiat 500 etc. online I've done bit of scan and price for the week (trying to keep options similar apples to apples) seems ok-ish, ranging from about €350 to €180 BUT looking behind some of these companies using likes of Trustpilot etc isn't helping. they all seem to have horror stories and they all seem great too LOL. would appreciate it if anyone reading this has a good hands on carhire experience they can recommend?

    thanks!

Not Bordeaux specifically but I'm just home from Toulouse and rented with Budget/Avis for the week. Had no hassle at all. Got my own insurance excess policy and took photos/videos of the car before I left the carpark. Only a few mins of a queue and no hard sell at the counter. Rented with them last year and had same good experience. They also didn't charge for me to drive into Spain.

I rented through Trip.com as they were the cheapest.

From my research Goldcar seemed to be the main one to avoid as they had very negative reviews.

I usually take out an "excess" insurance here at home before hiring and only take insurance that is included in the car hire agreement from the company that I hire from.

I try the usuals (Hertz, Almo, Enterprise, Europcar. etc) and hire from the cheapest for the period that I require, just check that there is no limitation to the mileage. One thing about going for "the small manual yoke" is that sometimes they run of those and give you something bigger without the additional charge.

If you're really nervous about scratches and dents, take pictures and videos of the car before driving away form the hire car compound and take a photos of the fuel & mileage on the clock.

Rented via Europcar from Bordeaux airport a few years back - they were excellent. They were really helpful in getting back a bit of lost property too, sent it without hassling about postage.

played safe and went for Avis in the end, and it wasn't even the dearest overall thanks everyone for input, oh and I also took excess cover separately as suggested which saved a good bit too

dunno much about the carhire business but I get the impression that some of those unfamiliar crowds like "goldcar" etc might be yet another example of "virtual billing" crowds…y'know where they don't really have their own show head to toe just piggybacking on other establishment companies that do…passing thru their surplus cars..and as a result the customer sometimes gets lucky and sometimes definitely gets unlucky lol
