Advice on purchase of car, insurance and other goings on

Looking for a bit of advice on the best approach for my minor predicament

Currently banned off the road but will be getting licence back in 2 months time.

About to purchase an automatic hybrid (€16k), however, won’t be able to get insured in it or drive it for at least 2 months.

So, car could potentially be sitting in my driveway for 2 months and not be driven during that period and with no insurance I also run the risk of losing quite a few quid if it was stolen.

I understand (correct me if I’m wrong) that my other half who currently is the policy holder & owner of their own car cannot be the main policy holder in the car I am about to buy as the car/logbook would be in my name, so that rules out me getting the car insured under her name so it can at least be driven around intermittently for the next 2 months and also be insured in case of theft.

My two concerns are 1) Car being stolen and not insured and 2) Car lying idle for two months and basically needing a service or more when I do get around to being able to drive it.

Only two options I can think of are:

    1. Buy car, don’t get insurance and leave it in an elderly family members driveway and park their car behind it, the elderly family member is in hospital and will be for the next couple of months, so their car is sitting idle and to be honest is on its last legs. Will probably face issues starting car in 2 months as it lay idle.
    2. Purchase car but get it put into partners name so they can be owner and get them to get insured in it for two months, they will technically have two cars in their own name. They can drive my car on/off to keep it active. Once two months are up get them to transfer car into my name. This presumably will add another car owner to the history of the car, is that a bad thing if I go to sell it down the line? Cost of insurance for a couple of months should only be a couple of hundred euro.

Anything else I should consider or be aware of?

    Thank you

Your partner can be the main policy holder on as many cars as they want. The car can still be registered to you since they are your partner as they have an insurable interest in the car

Or here’s a better idea, just wait until your legally allowed to drive before buying the car?

If your partner is your wife/husband they can insure a car registered to you. However, they will have not have a no claims bonus on the second car. A second/third etc car:s NCB can be built up with time. Then again neither will you have a NCB after being barred.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Thanks, I rang an insurance company earlier today and they said the other half couldn’t be the policy holder on a second (my car) as I would be the owner per the logbook.

I’m getting a really great deal on a car available now & been advised by people in the trade to snap it up ASAP.

Partner and I are NOT married but dating a few years, own a house together etc. Will that make a difference?

Just keep the car in your drive, unless you live in a crime ridden area who is going to go after a 16k hybrid car. Block it in with the other car at night.

I have an 20k bike parked in my drive half the time that's not insured majority of the year and not a second thought and that could be loaded into a van in 60 seconds

Are you sure about that? Anytime I have ever heard of anything like this the main policy holder has to be the owner of the vehicle. It's to prevent multiple insurance policy's on the same vehicle…

Im 99% sure you are wrong, are you comparing to some trade policy you have

Edit: it looks like you can but only select insurers will do this, not worth the effort at all

Been a few cars robbed in our area recently by a West Dublin gang (according to the Garda) a couple of them similarly priced automatics to what I potentially will have.

A car will not need a service because it's been idle for 2 months. At very worst, the battery will need to be charged.

You could disconnect the 12v battery and pull the fuel pump fuse, then leave it on the driveway. Much less likely to go anywhere then, it's not as if it's a high value targeted car etc.

    Are you buying it privately?

If not, I doubt you're getting the great deal you think you are.

Post details of the car and the price and we'll advise whether it's worth snapping up now and going through all the hassle.

For what it's worth I'd have an uninsured car on my driveway no problem

If it's a Toyota Aqua, it'll be gone soon enough

I hope they aren’t paying €16k for an Aqua

Why would a person offer you a great deal. Most people selling a car will be trying to get the market value.

What's the rush to collect? Is this a trade sale? If so just ask can you put down a very large deposit to secure the car and complete the purchase when ready.

Regarding your concerns above, '1) Car being stolen and not insured':

As suggested above, remove the 12V battery and a few strategic fuses and relays if you don't want the car moving, will also negate the risk of the car spontaneously combusting. Take a few wheels off and hide them also if you want to be sure that the gangs roving around the country with car transporters won't be bothered towing it away. Or go old school and get a good driveway security post for your house and/or decent CCTV system.

'2) Car lying idle for two months and basically needing a service or more when I do get around to being able to drive it.'

The car has probably been lying idle for longer than that while being in trade. Do the basic checks of fluids, tyres, lights etc. before driving and all should be fine, filling with some fresh petrol before parking it up wouldn't do any harm. I'm assume it's an electronic handbrake and can't be left off? If so, I'd suggest exercising it once a week to avoid any hassle with it sticking on.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Jap import it's the most targeted cars. Aqua and Vitz are probably the on the top of the list.
I would wait to get the car.

I know a great and reputable place that I bought a jap importated car and I also recommended to my friend. They have a 2017 Aqua for 10.5k. Are you sure this is a great deal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,678 ✭✭✭User1998

OP hasn’t confirmed if they are getting a Jap import, and they haven’t confirmed if they are buying a Vitz or Aqua. No point jumping to conclusions just yet. Like I said above €17k is way too much for an Aqua so its unlikely they are buying either a Vitz or Aqua

Getting car for slightly cheaper than well known dealership has offered to buy the car back for and dealership will be looking to add minimum €2.5k+ on to what I am paying for it.

Thank you for answering my questions :)

It is a private sale, seller will be emigrating soon so they want a quick sale.

Removing battery and a couple of strategic fuses, sounds perfect. I think I can leave the tires on.
A couple of cars were recently taken (and more targeted) in area and not all high powered fancy cars, hence my concern especially with no insurance.

Good suggestion on exercising handbrake once a week.

    Thank you.

Why can’t you name the make, model, and year so we can advise if its a car thats easy to steal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,329 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

if someone tries to steal it they'll only realise the engine is dead after they've broken into the car.

take one of the wheels off and prop it on blocks, they won't even try to take it in the first place.

On a slightly different angle to this, have you received a quote for insuring the car once your ban has expunged? What currently looks like a bargain could (at worst) turn out to be something you can't actually get insured on.
