    hi all,

I'am looking to replace a pair of Firestone Roadhawk tyres on my daughters 131 Passat and was wondering if there are any recomendations for alternatives tyres equal to them as i got a quote of 168e per tyre from my local dealer and need to find a cheaper solution.

    Thanks in advance

    brendan

Those are a mid range brand so anything similar from the likes of Hankook, Uniroyal, Kumho, Falken, Nexon, etc. Price will depend on the exact size but if they are stock Passat sized tyres then that should be a very common sized tyre. 168 sounds nuts for a mid range tyre unless they are for much larger rims that were fitted aftermarket.

Just avoid the cheaper unfamiliar named brands and claims by tyre sellers that they are budget brands made by one of the big tyre manufacturers.

That sounds crazy high - I got 3 of those exact tyre fitted to my car a few weeks ago at €105 per tyre by Global Tyres in Dundalk.

Mines a 2012 Civic with 17" tyres so should be similar to the Passat's.

You are getting fleeced at that money, can you order online and get them fitted yourself

This seems good value. Online they are €81 for 225/45/17. €168 is a joke

Firestone Roadhawk is a very good tyre despite the "midrange" tag of the Firestone brand. It's done really well in plenty of tyre tests in the German automotive mags.

Have had them myself a few times but find them to be loud. Now running Uniroyal Rainsport 5. As expected, very good in the wet, especially in a straight line, they don't tend to aquaplane. No idea of mileage yet.

Checked Oponeo, for a 131 VW Passat Saloon B7 2.0 TDI they have 205/55 R16 91 V for €76 each. Need to add in recycling charge of 3.44 per tyre. Local place might charge you €20 per tyre to fit.

Anyone know of a tyre place around the Dublin 15 area that would fit for a reasonable fee? Tried one place out past Clonee before but he was €25 a corner which was expensive. Read of someone here before that gets his done for €15 a tyre but can't find that now given the terrible search function.

Hankook tyres are good value for money. A nice soft tyre that's good wearing. Alot of car brands have them coking on their cars new.

I know one tyre centre near me stopped selling Firestone roadhawk as they were loosing their shape and couldn't be balanced

Just resurrecting this for any future users as only needed the tyres replacing recently.

Thanks for the suggestion, rang them during the week along with about 7 other operators in the D15 area. Haughton & Sons were €25 per tyre as were CentrePoint, McCann were €30 and then Global Service and Discount Tyres had a PFO price of €35. A few others then would only fit tyres they supply themselves. Coolmine Motors however did them for €20 each which includes balancing and disposal of the old. Have used Coolmine Motors a couple of times over the years and always found them accommodating and fair so pays to shop around.

Incidentally also picked up a puncture last week (my 2nd in about 15 years) in a fairly fresh tyre due to an embedded torx screw. Since on the phone with the above was surprised to learn a lot only did plugs at €15 (could do that myself in 5 mins); only McCann, Atlas, First Stop Coolmine and Discount Tyres would patch from the centre out with all of them at €20 except for McCann at €30. Got that done in First Stop Coolmine last week so hopefully no more tyre related matters for some time.

It shows the difference in pricing around the country.

I had four 20 inch tyres I purchased online fitted and balanced last week for 50euro in Wexford.

30 a piece for fitting is a rip off.

Its definitely cheaper outside of Dublin but €15 per tyre is achievable in Dublin.
