    Hi all,

looking to purchase a Skoda VRs at some stage.

Looking to spend as little as possible. Wondering would a clean mark 2 VRs 2.0tdi do the job? Or should I spend that extra 3/4 grand and get a mark 3 .

Trying to save as much money as I can for a deposit for a house .

Would like to hear your 2 cents, what do you think of these?

    Mark 2 I’m looking at:

    Mark 3:

The one annoying thing that stopped me getting a mk3 a few years ago was the handbrake on the wrong side. the armrest and something in the cup holder makes it very awkward to use it.

In reality the armrest doesn’t get in the way of the handbrake. It is on the wrong side (as in the LHD ones have it to the left of the cup holders too). I haven’t found that to be a huge issue either. The armrest adjusts backwards/forwards and up/down so its dependent on how you adjust the armrest.

OP, I’d be wary of a Mk3 that’s too cheap. There are a few bad ones around.

Had a MKIII for years and never even dawned on me the handbrake was on the "wrong" side. It was never a factor in anything and didn't affect the use of the movable armrest at all. The cup holder can come with a little inset that's supposed to be for holding phones but just lifts out, I forgot I even had one until I found it in the boot pocket when I was selling it on.

The MKIII is a nicer model, but I'd prefer the pre facelift model before they split the headlights, there probably isn't even any VRs's though in that config.

yeah I figured that might be the case. Price for Mark 2 seems alright , high mileage , but if she was well looked after she should be alright .

Might look at hiring a mechanic for a pre purchase inspection maybe

I'd push the boat out if you can for a decent Mk3. The Mk2 is very old now, it was launched 20 years ago and the majority of them are tatty and tired at this stage. The late facelifted Mk2 is also right in the middle of the VW dieselgate software cheating era too.
