Importing classic car from uk

    I know this has been covered before but was wondering if i imported a classic car from uk that is over 30years old that was imported firstly from South Africa to uk would I have to pay same charges mainly VAT at 23% I know vrt is 200euro and i think duty is nothing being over 30 years old.

    You'll pay the full VAT as it is its first time in the EU

    Does it make any difference if the car was originally manufactured in a current EU country? Thought I read something about that here.

    Don't know anything definite about that, at a guess I'd say no as the VAT wasn't paid here (or in the EU) originally….but that's a guess

    iv read somewhere that’s it’s up to the people that does the vat that they can charge anything thing they want witch definitely puts me off

    They can't really charge anything they want, it would be VAT on the landed cost of the vehicle (shipping + insurance + invoice cost + handling). Raise a query with Revenue, they are generally helpful and will be able to help you on the country of manufacture question.

    Anything that's not on the official Government website for VAT, Duty, VRT etc etc is to be taken with a pinch of salt! Facebook or Twitter (or this website for that matter) aren't trusted websites for information!!
