Car engine firing cycle.

    Posting here as some of you all may be knowledgeable on my question.

    In an inline 4 cylinder engine (i4), am I correct that at any one time, each of the 4 cylinders is doing one of the 4 stages of running (intake, compression, power and exhaust)?

    If so, what's going on in a i6, are 2 cylinders idle for a portion of the rotation?

    They are all doing something, they simply have 2 more pistons, hence greater power, (usually).

    A 6 Cylinder will have the pistons offset by 120 degrees, sort of arranged as 2 x 3 to get 2 x 360 cycles, whereas a 4 cyl wil have 90deg. So 3 bangs per 2 revolutions gives a smoother power and better balance than 2 bangs per 2 revs.
