Diesel or petrol

Hi folks looking for some advice. I need to get a new second hand car. My Toyota Verso 2016 has given me a lot of problems and cost. It needed a new egr valve, intake manifold and also the abs pump is faulty. I passed the nct and was advised by Toyota dealer to get rid ASAP. I suppose for the first couple of years owning the car I did only short trips to collect the kids 5 mins up the road. Back working last two years and driving car longer distances but the soot build up prob started from the first two years.

My experience has really put me off diesels, however I do on average 16000 km a year sometimes 18. I know a diesel would be more fuel efficient and cost me less per week regarding fuel. However a diesel does require more maintenance cost than a petrol so would the maintenance of a diesel counteract the fuel saving?

I'm looking at a Skoda Octavia in either a 2 litre diesel of 1.5 petrol. Does anyone do 16-20000km with a petrol?

Why are you bringing an 8 year old car to the Toyota dealer for maintenance? You’ve listed only 3 issues, and you’ve passed the NCT. Why would you get rid of the car?

A mechanic advised me to go for a petrol over a diesel even after telling him about the kilometres I do. He said the maintenance of a diesel will counter balance the price of petrol at the pumps. Any thoughts?
