Currently considering upgrading to a new car from a 191 1 litre petrol focus. Can’t decide between a new focus st 1 litre petrol or the new plug in Kuga . Any thoughts?

Focus ST is a 2.3L petrol.

Family members have 1 of each, although in diesel,

Personally I prefer the focus, not a fan of the high up seating position on crossovers.

Kuga is a nice car though, both the same on the inside, only difference to be honest is the Kuga sits higher.

Drive both and see what you think.

I assume they meant ST Line

OP mentions upgrading to a Focus 1.0 ST in their opening post so I think it's safe to say they are not talking about a real ST and meant ST Line.

OP, one is a petrol hatchback and the other is a plug in hybrid crossover so it's really up to you which one is suitable for you. The Focus is pretty much the same car you have now but received a revision about 2 years ago. However like the Fiesta, the Focus is being phased out in the next 12 months or so and their won't be a new one, at least not as a traditional hatchback anyway.

Kuga now got a revision for 2025. Will have a higher driving position and maybe easier to get in and out of especially if you have young children. Boot size like most of these crossovers wouldn't be too different to the Focus but might be a little more practical. Do you have the ability to charge at home because plug in hybrids only really work if they are charged frequently otherwise you will still be driving a 2.5 litre petrol engine and carrying around a battery in the Kuga.

Yep just meant the St line. I can install a charger at home alright, just unsure if the Kuga is worth the higher price tag. Also unsure if I should look elsewhere , had a glance at cupra also.

Crossovers and SUVs command a premium because they are popular and trendy. Traditional family hatchbacks are dying because of this however.

If you are happy with the Focus and it suits your needs then maybe spending more on the Kuga just for a higher driving position and 50/60km of electric range isn't worth it. An alternative would be a Skoda Octavia.

Kuga has independent rear suspension and more practical interior , sliding and reclining rear seats .

Drivetrain is a big difference too with a hybrid being smoother and quieter drive.

Have been looking at Kuga but decided to keep old focus.

Drive both and see if you like Kuga
