Enough space for two mini ponies

My daughter, who has been riding for a few years is trying to convince me to get two miniature ponies to keep as pets. She'd love a normal pony to ride, but we don't have the space. Our plot (with the house) is on an acre, so we could fence off about half an acre as a paddock and build a couple of stables. Is this enough for a couple of small mini ponies (under 10h). Would the half acre just become a mud bath? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
