Labeling wooden crates

I'm doing a very big tidy up in a shed and am making wooden boxes to put stuff into as I sort it.

Any suggestions for a convenient way to label the boxes?

I could just sand one side of each box and write on it with a permanent marker but maybe there's a better way.

not all the same label, so? i saw the thread title and had been going to suggest a stencil, but that's too much work for different labels.

Yeah - different labels for different stuff - plumbing, electrical etc.

Sanding wouldn't take that long if you used an angle grinder with a very course sanding disc say P40.

Then give the area a quick coat of emulsion paint or any light coloured paint you have handy. Then when dry out with the marker pen.

Another option would be to sand off and put a sticker on to write on or any of these?
