Howdy all. Been a while since I was in here, but with Sony confirming the release date for the PSVR2 support on PC, which I will most certainly be getting so I can play Alyx, I've decided to fill the time in-between with the series so far. Spec below, but can people recommend the best way to play HL1/2/Ep1/Ep2 games today? Are there newer versions that do everything, what would be the best mods, etc? Tried searching, but lots of differing and contrasting replies and not recent enough.

So what would you fine PC gamers advise to get the best HL experience (for my build!) today? Games are old enough I should be able to run most mods maybe?

    Ryzen 7 5800x

    Inno3D RTX 3060 Twin X2 12Gb

    Corsair Vengeance 32Gb 3600MHz

    Windows 10 (if it matters)

I can no longer see a way to edit posts… (edit: apparently can't edit the #1 post now?)

Looks like Black Mesa would be the best bet for HL1, and I actually don't own HL1 on Steam (absolutely no idea where I played it so!) but I do own HL1: Source, and the 3 HL2 games. But would Black Mesa ruin HL2 due to a visual downgrade or are there mods that can fill the gap?

Steam was released in tandem with HL2; you had to create a steam account to play HL2 on the PC.

So HL1 would have predated steam (unless you played it a few years after it came out).

Oh I wouldn't have had it from launch, it wasn't long after the Orange Box released and I ended up with a free copy somehow, that I actually played the first one iirc. Must have been a pirate or disc maybe. Long time ago… I had no idea of the amazing games I had on that orange disc.

Half Life 2 has the Cinematic mod, but i wouldn't touch it. Changes too many things for the worse, and don't even get me started on the character models 🤣

I read about that, and it seems a shame as it's the only one to upgrade everything. And it does look good, aside from the sexual references, character models and graffiti - I now understand where "Fully Modelled" comes from. Some recommending Cinematic, but with another mod to remove all that stuff, and MMod for the reworking of the weapons. Surprised Valve haven't jumped on the remake bandwagon.
