10k to spend

    Hi all,

Looking at upgrading from my 08 Octavia 1.9tdi.

I have 10k to spend. I've narrowed it down between 2 cars really.

Skoda superb (hatchback) and a Volvo v60.

Both are 2015 cars. Similar mileage 270k. Both state 3 months warranty

Superb is the 2.0tdi and the Volvo is the 2.0 d3 cross country.

Mostly looking for something spacious(3 kids and dogs) and reliable, and doesn't cost a fortune to fix. And if possible leather seats as they are so much easier to clean!!

Do about 400-500km a week so I'm thinking best to stick to diesel.

Also looking to purchase from someone that gives some kind of warranty. 10k is @alot for me and don't want to be stuck with an extra large paperweight after a week.

Or is there any of cars within this price range you'd recommend?

    Cheers

Any interest in a Toyota Prius? Seems to fit your requirements perfectly.

Volvo and cheap to fix are not two things that tend to go together from when I was considering one; Toyota on the other hand as recommended by @User1998 …

At that mileage range I would not be expecting reliability with that budget you need to go for something older but less mileage or something more basic

I also recommend keeping the Octavia,

Buying another car you do not know the history of at that price can be dodgy but there are a lot of other cheap petrol cars out there going cheap but if you must stick with diesel I recommend keeping the car you have if it's running and keep it until it dies.

That's 167,000 miles on your Octavia, 270,000 Kms seems a lot but that 1.9 will go for over 300,000 "miles" look after it, change oil regularly.

Most you will get is 3 month warranty on Engine and gearbox.

God be with the days you could fit 5 kids on the back seat of a Renault 5 and another 5 in the boot lol.

Sorry only getting to reply now.

I had looked at hybrid but my daily journey is 95% 100/120kmh roads so I can't see it being economical for my kind of driving.

And I think the boot and back space on them Prius are quite small?

Oh sorry forgot to add in the original post.

The only reason Im looking to change is because the Octavia currently has a pretty loud rattle with the clutch so that will need replacing. It keeps throwing up a turbo over boost code(restarting or clearing fault code clears this temporarily) and there is a pretty big crack in the windscreen so that will need to be replaced on its next nct. (Expires 3 months from now). Oh my insurance doesn't cover windscreen so will have to come out of my own pocket.

Adding in my insurance is a few hundred dearer because of the year of the Octavia (makes no sense to me). My insurance price went down when I tried to insure a newer and more powerful car.

Other then them few issues I would of happily kept driving the Octavia as it's a miser on diesel and actually nice to drive. But I'm not sure spending more then the cars worth on fixing these issues.

Even if you need a new clutch + flywheel + windscreen, those should cost €2000 or so maximum.

With the price of secondhand cars now, you're paying thousands more than the car is worth to but it. Don't expect that to last, so 1) you'll be hit by deprection, and 2) either of those with 270k km will come with issues of their own.

Don't change for the sake of saving money - but if you want to come up the years, have a change, then fair enough - this is a motors forum after all!

On the Prius, it has 90k km less than the other two options which is a major plus. I had one for loan recently, and while it's not the most comfortable car in the world it'll go forever and was great on petrol tbh. The one I was loaned was low on oil, coolant and brake fluid (to give a sense of how it was maintained) and it ran great.
