Hi all, myself and my boyfriend are visiting York for a few days and I'm just wondering if anyone has been and has any recommendations of interesting things to do or see. We're going to see a comedian in Harrogate. We're taking the ferry to Stranraer then driving down. Also if anyone could recommend a nice place to stay on the way back up that would be great. Thanks!

Aside from all the usual stuff, Broadway, Ellis Island, Empire State Building…what I really enjoyed the first time I was there was the Intrepid Air and Space Museum. It's an aircraft carrier docked at pier 86 in Manhattan and if you, or your bf are into military, or machinery, it's an impressive visit which will take up a few hours. The Enterprise Shuttle is there for starry eyed visitors. You also get a chance to get into a submarine docked beside the ship. It's been 10 years since I visited, but these things change very little over time.

    ^^^ Emmm…

Make sure you walk the city walls. The York Castle Museum is one of the best museums I've visited. The recreation of a Victorian street is particularly good. The National Railway Museum is also well worth visiting if you have any interest in trains and it's free. York Minster of course can't be missed.

    The Rail Museum is excellent.

Watch out for anthropomorphic ninja turtles in the sewers of York.

Follow the Roman Walk for the history of Eboricum and visit the Jorvik Centre for history of the Viking city including it's links to Dublin, bit pricey but definitely worth it.

There's also the dungeons, chocolate museum and a boat trip along the Ouse.

Definitely one of my favourite cities in Britain.

There are interesting walking tours in York, 'scary tours' some of them.

    The museum is excellent.

Obviously walking around the old part/shambles is lovely, as is York Minister.

York is still quite cheap compared to other cities nearby like Leeds, some very good value on dinners out etc.

York is a really nice spot, few days is lovely there.

Ah yes the dinners out will be important lol. It's getting to the stage where I have to carry an emergency bar of chocolate in my handbag as my boyfriend gets hangry 😄

Just wondering what is the best airport to fly into and the best way from there to York? Thanks!

Leeds Bradford is the closest, but you have to take a bus to leeds, (£2) then a train/bus to York. (Train about £15 ish return, train takes about 35 mins)

I believe there are direct trains from Manchester airport to York, haven't got one myself, I'd say they take 2 1/2 hours.

Betty's Tea Rooms and a walk through the Shambles etc - maybe join an official walking tour?

I've researched this a lot lol and the difference isn't much whether it's Leeds Bradford or Manchester airport. The big difference seems to be the price and the times.

Any recommendations on where to stay in York?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭Ash40

We stayed in The Queens Hotel. Reasonably priced, nice clean rooms and handy parking. They have a parking garage where you park in and you're within handy walking distance to the town, just over the bridge and you're in the town. It's a bit dated looking inside but for me that's neither here nor there.

The rail museum is very good, and it right beside York Station and it is attached to the lovely Principal Hotel.

Betty's Tea Rooms definitely has to be visited; the Shambles and York Minster too. It is a very friendly city to just walk around.

Yeah, the OP pointed that 3 weeks ago. I also think the OP is a girl….going with "her" boyfriend. Easy to miss things though 😉

Just to say a quick thank you for all the recommendations, the Railway museum was infact fantastic to see! We took a guided walk which was interesting, visited the shambles, had the biggest roast beef dinner with Yorkshire pudding all stuffed inside a wrap of some sort 🤣, passed Betty's tea room but couldn't justify the money for morsels of food....looked like a lovely place. I will say that there is a bakery every 3 doors down lol which is great and one of the above comments is right it's such a beautiful friendly place to walk around.
