They're not a bad car, engines aren't the most reliable but not the worst either, I've heard they can develop issues with the gearbox but at 90,000 miles I don't think either should be an issue. Just get a mechanic to look over it before you buy.

I've seen posts about the Lane Keep assist being quite aggressive on them and also "sticking" steering but the latter is easily sorted with some more grease on the steering rack teeth or something like that.

It's base model trim but the standard equipment on Hyundai seems to be pretty good

Missus has one and hasn't had to put much money or effort into it.

Lane assist can be a bit jerky but you'll get used to it in no time and can switch it off if you don't like it.

There was an issue with the 'tailgate strut', which keeps the boot lifted up in the air once you open it. One failed and had to be replaced. When I asked in the Hyundai garage if I could buy one, your man knew the model and year of the car without asking, so that's obviously a known fault. Replaced it myself with a couple of spanners for less than €40.

Only minor gripes I have are:

    a) the satnav is a pain in the hole - You have to select everything in reverse order or it won't show up……e.g. if you're looking for Croke Park, you have to have Dublin 3 selected before you search for Jones' Road, or it will return zero results. Instead of typing "Jones road" and getting one in Galway, one in Wexford and one in Dublin, you just get no results because your previous search was in Wicklow and there are no Jones Roads in that county. If you're not sure what part of Dublin it's located in, or what county then tough sh1t.

    b) the rear view mirror vibrates when you're accelerating

    c) the upholstery gets stained very easily, get a leather one if you can and

    d) too much touchscreen interaction instead of radial buttons….e.g. There is a warning when you hit the satnav or map button about "using this while driving is a distraction, please make sure that you are stopped before continuing further. Drivers are responsible for their own blah blah blah". You can only get rid of this by clicking the "I understand" button. The only time I've ever come close to being distracted enough by the satnav to the point where it affected my driving is when I have to take my eyes off the road to find that feckin button.

These are minor, though. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. The driving position is unreal.

Interesting to hear about the steering issue. I had one (company car) and the steering was a little bit sticky - very tiring to drive. Steering rack was replaced under warranty.

I think this is just as the steering wheel goes through the centre i.e turning right to left, it's a known issue and easily fixed. No parts needed just some grease.

No, Tucsons had a TSB on them and the fix was to replace the whole rack.

We have a 211, love the car but real issue with some of the sensors. It's been in 5 times from new with sensor issues, all different.

Check the windscreen as well, ours went and it took them 7 weeks to source a new one

engines do seem to be a weak point, but bloody lovely cars to drive, mechanic was showing me a relatively new one, a rental, was explaining what was wrong with the engines, but was way above my pay grade in understanding, was showing me the start of the issues with that particular car, i was fairly shocked, car was stunning though

Had one as a work vehicle.

It was a lemon from day 1.

Had another one as a work Vehicle.. was a lemon after a month.

Lots of them had no issues, but many did have problems with ECUs and clutch.

And we were waiting months for new ECUs.

    Work stopped buying Tusons.

I've my 152 for 2 years now. I love it, but it's not without its issues!

Gearbox/synchro is a known issue. Local mechanic who deals with gearboxes and clutches exclusively said he does about 2 a week between the Sportage and Tucson. He replaced the synchro for 3rd-6th gear, cost €800 including VAT. This occurs around 90k miles, but the mechanic said it can be anywhere between 70-100k miles.

Another issue was I had was an ABS ring cracked which set off the ABS at slow speed braking. Took a while to figure out but wasn't a big job then. Not sure if this is an issue with the Tucson or I was just unlucky.

Steering, as someone mentioned above. When driving at "high" speed, say over 100kph, the steering becomes very stiff. It'll turn a couple of degrees each direction and then it hits something that takes a bit of extra pressure to get past. This is with steering and lane assist deactivated. Seems to be a common issue with the Tucson. You get used to it after a while but still, shouldn't really happen.

The SATNAV is pretty crap and I rarely bother with it. It's painful to search an address. The rest of the infotainment system is good though, in my opinion.

Other than that, I love it. Comfortable to drive, plenty of room front, back and in the boot. I thinks it's a great looking car too.

My other half is due twins shortly and wants to take the Tucson off me. I've been looking the last few days for something similar but for the money I'll be spending, 20k or less, I don't think I'll find much better. I'll possibly just get another Tucson but an executive model.
