When importing a car from the UK do customs demand payment at Port or is that something that has to be organised later by me? I don't want to be stung with a bill I'm not prepared for

If it comes on the back of a truck it needs to be paid in advance. If you drive it back yourself or through the North no questions will be asked and you can do it at a later date.
