5 series estate vs the rest

I fancy updating my E60 diesel estate. Unfortunately, BMW's answer is an i5 starting at 85k which is exactly double my budget.

so for 40k what estate would ye have. I do petrol mileage so can take diesel/petrol/hybrid/battery, I don't care as long as it is an estate

So do you want a new car or a used car?

Obvious answer is somewhere around a 2020 5 series/A6/E class if you're happy to go used, moving up at least 10 years there from an e60

As for new cars, slim enough pickings

I had an a6 allroad, a6 estate, currently g31 520d and changing to g31 530e LCi. Merc too average, Volvo too rare to get good deals, although they’re are a few lovely examples now and again, cross country very smooth . Audi is a lovely unit, but again not enough of them around so overpriced. Allroad was a great car too but again too rare. value is in 530e imports as so many of them around and a fair few estates. Plenty of review saying the 530e is all the car anyone could need. The new model has a much bigger battery and not as restricted boot space but will be waiting a year or two to get one second hand. The current model has some nicer features that are gone in new one too like the window glass opening and electric load cover.

Only downside to the 530e is the pretty severely impacted boot floor and smaller petrol tank. Its annoying but not a deal breaker for me.

is that about where I will wind up or is it likely I might get something decent by the turn of the year for 30k?

It's 63k miles on a 3 year old car, probably an ex UK fleet car. You will have to up your budget for a lower mileage example. 40k just doesn't get you now what 40k got a few years back due to new car price rises and inflation.

If you are in the position, hold onto your E60 estate - those looks amazing, (even better in comparison to the new 5 series) and are a future classic.

Its expecting a lot from the Lexus/Merc owners to appreciate e61 = e60 touring. Even e60 with BMW context is a little inside baseball

Mild hybrid is basically like an advanced stop/start system so I would see it as a nice addition for city driving, but DPF issues will still occur if not driven on the motorways.

If you can increase your budget or wait 6 months you'd get the car you're looking for.

€45-49k would get you into lower milage LCI 530e with decent spec - these get snapped up quick though.

Did you enter the Nox correctly into the calculator? Otherwise it will charge you the maximum amount. Nox should be around 0.030

Anyway, the government don’t want you importing diesels. Look at 530e if you want cheap VRT

The 530e only came in estate form with the facelift model from late 2020 onwards. Pre facelift 530e was saloon only.

it’s over your budget. But you will save some money on fuel , servicing and tax. And it’s a fab car.
