So many Irish went to New York City that its sources are useful to many. Could I add to the above good info these free sources? You can search birth, marriage and death certificate numbers on two great sites, the Italian Genealogical Group and the German Genealogical Group. Both cover everyone, not just those ethnicities. With the cert numbers, you can now search for and download images of the actual certificates for free online, thanks to the group, Reclaim the Records. They are not all online yet. The site explains coverage. Many more are listed by cert number than name. In the NYC link below, click on it, then the part that begins a860. The links are—

I use the NYC vital records all the time. A great resource.

Hi, I also use the NYC records a lot. I knows it requires subscription but My hertiage has now added them with index including of secondary people on the records like parents and witnesses to marriages. It's a good point that sometimes a different transcription of the same resource will be easier to use and refine.
