What type of face mask do you use when spraying roundup with knapsack sprayer? Have some spraying to do and wondering should I buy the more expensive type that uses disposable filters (cost around €40 online) or would a more basic type do the job?

Roundup could give you an incurable brain tumor resulting in an agonizing death so i would think the answer is obvious or maybe do what most farmers do, wear no mask and envelope yourself in a fog of deadly chemical.

You need an FFP3 grade mask anything lower won't protect you.

You also need goggles, infact you need a disposable suittgst covers your head along with correct grade gloves & wellies.

a good wake up call to any1 who thinks the mask alone is sufficient & I've done this myself & it's an eye opener.

Put on all the correct gear as above fill knapsack with water, add a dye colour like blue mark dye & go and spray the knapsack of water.

You'll see where the spray actually will end up no matter how calm it is.

Best lesson I ever got....from a colleague whose cousin gave 10 days roaring before passing away, worked in horticulture all is life & treated the likes of roundup like it was water

That stuff should be banned from the face of the Earth. Kills millions of bees annually. https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/new-study-shows-roundup-kills-bees

I havent it done myself yet but it could be worth doing a spraying course.

A lad i work for used to be very poor with ppe when spraying until he did the course, now its full ppe, suit etc.

So it must have been giod to change him

The course is helpful but it's only common sense, however i've sprayed all my life and still here even though I never used PPE.

Regarding the course our instructor told us at the end to throw our notes on the floor before he handed out our final test . Then he said he'd be back in half an hour and walked out the door so any one that hadn't a clue just picked up their notes off the floor and copied.

The most interesting fact I learned on the course was the hobby gardener growing vegetables were often ingesting the highest dose of chemicals from their produce because their tendency to over spray

I think and I stand corrected, the ffp3 is the level of cover the mask gives, but to add to that, the filters need to be for chemical vapours and not just the standard filter that comes with the kits, I wear masks a fair bit with work, would have 2 different types of filters depending on the type of dust or fumes that are present in the air for the work I do.

I know the filter I have for spraying on the farm is for I think "inorganic fumes" to the best of my memory.

Not all masks are equal if you go to any good supplier and explain what your doing they should be able to guide you in the right direction

This is what I use, Alpha Solway is the brand, I can't get the smell of the spray when I'm spraying which is a good sign that the mask is working. EPT in Carlow sell them

    Tests were on farmers.

But smokers had elevated levels too. So obviously being used to desicate the tobacco plant.

What desiccant is used on potato stalks prior to harvesting. I think they use something to toughen the skin on potato also.

I used the most of a bottle of grazon90 and smoked about 15 Benson & hedges, so my swimmers are well and truly bolloxed tonight
