Choice based letting -Dublin homeless

Im 10 years and 2 months homeless not on drugs or any issue with substances. Break down in my relationship back working after a mental breakdown the last 2 years. I was advised by council to push for CBL properties.

I've applied for a number of 1 bedrooms which have became available this week 16 to be exact.

Can anyone tell me should I be high priority with 10 years in a hostel and looking at 1 beds on CBL or is there other factors.

Nobody here can tell you where you are on the list. The council can though.

Bear in mind housing lists are dynamic and points based. It's entirely possible to be #5 one week and #20 the next because it's not just based on time on the list, it's based on housing need.

No each list is different in Dublin.

Dublin city council uses a points based system, where SDCC don't. Priority and length of time on the list is what's considered.

long term unemployment is extremely common with long term mental heath issues, try convince an employer of this situation, and that you would very likely be missing many days due to these facts, then of course try convince a property owner of these facts, and that rent payments could be a little sketchy to say the least…..

A lot.

I work in finance and my colleague has had to tender her resignation and move back to Brazil as she can't secure accommodation for herself and her son. She has been approved for Hap and can't find anywhere to take her on, she can't afford to rent on her own anymore.

She has been here for 10 years and paid taxes and put herself through college as well.

So if a tax payer on a modest income can't put her a roof over her head we have a massive problem with people underneath that level having a chance too.

To be honest I half expected a lot of people will move back to their countries because of the state of the rental market. Many would have access to superior rentals back home for a fraction of price. Sorry to hear about your friend.

Ok didn't want to go into detail, but I'm an engineer working now for Murphy's international as a junior site agent. I've a degree in engineering, 10 years ago my wife got pregnant for my brother and I took a massive break down stopped working. I was 9 years and 7 months in hostels then recently to a transition house. I'm on 46.5k a year. And I pay maintenance for 2 kids. I can't afford to rent privately also with the likelihood that I have a bounce back and end up sick again. You may not understand it but this is my life I'm trying to preserve.

Bit Rich of you to comment not having first hand experience on the matter...

My best friend was in emergency accomodation for 6 months and couldn't wait to get out. NO FAMILY around, in between jobs, 10yrs of references and she managed to get out. The NGO did nothing to help her btw.

Meanwhile, the Irish and Nigerian sharing the room with her (both with families in the city, where they happily spent the holidays and other occasions, one working FT in healthcare, none of them on drugs) when questioned the reason why they were in for so long the answer was: "if you stay with family they don't help you" by they reads the government. What about private accomodation on HAP? "I don't want that anymore".

The message is clear... Take from that what you will…

People on 46k should not be homeless.

This is the salary where renting 1bed apartments "should" be accessible.

46k outside of Dublin, and without maintenance payments for 2 kids, would be a good enough salary.

In Dublin, you won't rent much if you're looking 1 bed apartment on 46k

46k a year is nothing. I pay 105 euro rent a week in my transitional house, I pay 200 euro a week maintenance. I then need to buy shopping, have money to spend time with my kids. if you think 46k I could afford 1200 minimum a month rent I can't.

From your posts its fairly safe to assume that you are male, unfortunately that puts you at the very end of the que for the majority of most state or charity aid when it comes to accommodation. Realistically your best bet is to try and look for an apartment where HAP is accepted. I know it will be difficult given your previous circumstances but you need to keep all your options open.

I really am searching going in with 2500 I've saved as a sweetner to the landlord. I have never touched drugs look quite well presented. But nothing it's tough

I am sorry to hear the situation you are in.

I do hope you are not paying maintenance for the kid your brother fathered.

By the way you are doing a great job paying maintenance. You will be surprised how many fathers out there don't pay a penny and get away with it.

I don't pay his child no. It was very public that the child wasn't mine. I pay for my own 2 a beautiful daughter and son.

Hopefully something happens for me soon. Feel quite let down that I can't even afford a bedsit.
