Putting up Douglas fir barge boards soon on my parents old cottage. What should I treat it with before painting? What's the best type of paint to use

If it was me I 'd knot all the knots, then a coat of preservative and then prime.
By the way is it shop bought, kiln dried or home grown?

Not cut, we've to cut a traditional pattern onto it
It is planed, got a joinery to do that

Yes, I'd also be doing knotting for sure as it's very sappy wood.
