Arrives June 12. Master Gyllenhaal delving into TV.

Presumed Innocent is an eight-part limited series starring and executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, hailing from David E. Kelley and executive producer J.J. Abrams. The star-studded ensemble cast also includes Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Chase Infiniti, Nana Mensah, Renate Reinsve, Peter Sarsgaard, Kingston Rumi Southwick and Elizabeth Marvel. Based on The New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow, the gripping series takes viewers on a journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys' office when chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (played by Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime. The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.

I recently watched the Harrison Ford film, clever and enjoyable, so hope this can match it

I read the book years ago and have seen the Harrison Ford film. It's a good story and somebody having another go at adapting it isn't the worst idea. My reservation is that they're stretching it out over too many episodes.

Full trailer. I'll watch anything with Bill Camp.

Is Peter Sarsgaard still with Jake's sister Maggie

Watched E3 earlier, they're all excellent actors, well cast in their respective roles, but O-T Fagbenle stands out as the exceptionally smug new DA, Nico Della, who's constantly trying to mentally rein-in the vindictive Tommy Malto, who's got a massive hard on for the stories main protagonist Rusty Savage played by Gyllenhaal.

would district attorney's office prosecute the murder of one of their own colleagues?

would they seemingly be so involved in the investigation…

Up to date on this before the finale. Binged the whole lot. Really enjoying it. Hopefully a good finish to Season 1.

This has very quietly snuck into my list of shows most gripping me; really well put together and exceedingly tense for what ostensibly reads like a courtroom/legal drama. Watched the first 4 episodes and just loving it

And Gyllenhaal has been absolutely nailing that anti-charisma of his; that roiling angry energy that always leaves you a little on edge with his characters. Our own Ruth Negga has been punching pretty well too, playing what could have been a thankless role; and the rival DA / lawyer prosecuting the case a fantastically slimy duo.

I’ve been watching it and really enjoying it, and at the weekend I couldn’t wait any longer to find out the ending and watched the movie with Harrison Ford 🙈

I actually think the show is a lot better, the movie felt full of very stilted, unnatural performances, to me. Of course, they may not have the same ending either! But an interesting comparison.

Excellent final episode. Solid season. Hope Apple make more like this.

Just watched the final episode there. Won't go into any detail until more have watched it as I don't know how to spoiler anymore. But it really was a great show, the most invested I've been in a show in a long while, having episodes come out weekly helped.

Jesus, must be on my own here. Myself and the wife thought it was absolutely dreadful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,899 ✭✭✭jj880

Wow thats surprising. Did you and your wife think just the ending was poor or the whole series?

Fully concur, absolute pile of ****. For anyone who had seen the movie or read book the change to the twist could be seen coming a mile away. They just wanted to do something a little bit "different". O-T Fagbenle's voice is incredibly annoying.

Last couple of episodes had some really bizarre Nolanesque Gotham-style colouring to a number of scenes, completely out of the blue and inconsistent with the test of the show. Didn't find it suspenseful or particularly well written.

should be called a Conflict of Interest

I do like an "old fashioned" courtroom drama, so on the whole, I enjoyed this series. I looked forward to each episode every week. Makes a bit of a change from binging on episodes.

Like most Apple TV stuff, it was very slickly made, high production values. The casting was generally strong too I think. I like anything Bill Camp is in (does he remind anyone else of the late George Kennedy?!). Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard in particular were very good too imo. I wasn't too sold on Ruth Negga, I didn't find her marriage / relationship with Gyllenhaal particularly believable. She wasn't given a lot to do either other than that one episode where she flirted with the barman. And what was going on with O-T Fagbenle's voice/accent? It was bizarre! I realise he's English so he had to put on a US accent but it sounded so weird…

Ultimately though I thought the ending (the last 15 minutes) was very silly, not at all plausible. Pity, as I thought it was strong right up to the verdict in court.

I wonder what the second series will bring? A whole new story or re-treading this same case?

Whole thing. Around episode 3 she'd decided it was shíte and I ended up concurring with her an episode later. The ending was total rubbish but just felt the writing and acting throughout was poor. The English guy playing the District Attorney, what was up with that accent he was doing?

Apple seem to be the masters of solid but unspectacular tv shows. With a few exceptions. Apparently the accountants have started to reign in the spending, as the budgets for many of these shows were outrageous.

I found Negga's character a bit weird and unbelievable as well. The romance seemed as if it was only there to give her more to do as it's not as if it really impacted on the story or the characters.

I found the twist at the end all a bit deus ex machina-y. And eventually it turned out she was killed by oh…let's say…Moe. Sorry, Jaden. Having seen the movie I figured they might do something to change it up from the wife, but it just came out of nowhere. Nothing you could call back to. Same as Rusty's "I knew it was you all along. Look, I tracked your car!" schtick. It was all just whipped out at the end without anything to make it in any way convincing that this is what he'd believed beforehand.

Gyllenhaal, Saarsgard, and Bill Camp carried it so for that on its own, I enjoyed the show.

I hadn't seen the film (or at least I can't recall seeing it), or read the book, so I knew nothing about how it was going to end, to the point that I'd even question if we know who the real killer is yet. I wonder is the sister protecting the brother as it just makes little sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,899 ✭✭✭jj880

Yeah I hadnt seen any movies / read books either so as a standalone series I thought it was good. Saarsgard took it for me. Great performance.

Thought Sarsgaard was terrific. Didn't buy Gyllenhaal's performance at all.

I watched some of this on holiday. For me, it's in the solid-decent category. I'm getting frustrated by how often the horrible photos of the deceased, Carolyn, that the show feels ok flashing about. In. Every. Episode. I do think its strength is in some of the character beats where it has some heft. Both Rusty and Tommy have some pretty colossal blind spots, partly driven by ego, anger, self-destruction and also family for Rusty. Wasn't too surprised to see Greg Yaitanes directing as he knew to use tension when he worked on House MD. I liked the stylistic choice of the non-dialogue based drive to court in episode 5 and how the judge's hands were like a conductor holding the orchestra as the music concluded.

I wasn't a fan of seeing those images either, but I suppose they worked to a degree, as you're meant to be deeply repulsed and pissed off seeing them. If the viewer is the jury, you definitely feel influenced by them.

It's been said before Hollywood has made excessive use of women's bodies as fodders for procedurals and the like. I find it hard to disagree in the case of this show. Even if you put aside the legal focus, imo they're overselling it by throwing the images into some of the side meetings before court took front and centre.

I'm kind of surprised that this got such a warm reception from audiences in general. I've seen the movie a few times (never read the book) but felt like the entire thing was played in the most sensational way possible, with everyone's acting and behaviours ramped up to 11. Gyllenhaal (who I usually enjoy in roles) was extremely OTT throughout, and even though they lampshaded his manic behaviour during the court scenes, I found it hard to believe that someone with his hair trigger responses to everything could believabily function as a lawyer. It felt more like a soap opera style show than anything else, particularly the ending. Not for me sadly, and even more disappointed that this show of all Apple shows ended up being their most popular........
