How long after breaking leg to go on holiday?

My daughter (6) broke her leg over the w/e. We've a holiday booked for the end of the month.

I'm wondering what others would do in this situation, or have been in this situation & how it went. We've insurance so probably could cancel & claim the costs back, not considering money as a factor in the decision. If we think she will hate it & have a horrible time I'd cancel even if the travel insurance wouldn't refund it.

I've had different opinions with some saying go anyway & others saying cancel. The doctor said the cast should be off by the time we're going. We're waiting to go back to the hospital to get her cast changed & may know better then. With a cast still on I think it's definitely cancel but if it's off would she be up for a holiday?

if the holiday is your typical warmish holiday with swimingpool it might be a good way of her building up muscles again in her leg after the injuiry .

Childrens bones heal quicker than adults. My son was 6 or 7 when he fractured 3 bones in his foot but was out of knee high cast within 3 weeks unlike myself who spent 7 weeks in a cast when I fractured my ankle plus he was flying around within days of having the cast off while it took me a couple of months plus physio to walk without a limp again.

I suggest waiting until the next hospital appointment before deciding what to do but if the cast is expected to be off by the time you're due to go on holiday then as previously mentioned the pool would be great for rehabilitation. Maybe bring the crutches with her but it's surprising how quickly children get over needing them.

Probably the cruel Victorian father in me, or maybe the fact that I regularly work with and socialise with individuals of various sizes and ages with broken bones, so I read "My daughter (6) broke her leg over the w/e. We've a holiday booked for the end of the month." and think "… and ???"

My daughter once broke her wrist on holiday (also 6 at the time). Diagnosis and treatment on the spot; no interruption to holiday. With a month's notice, I'd never let anyone's broken arm or leg get in the way of a holiday … unless it was my leg and I needed it for driving.

Id imagine by the time ye go the leg will be well healed.Only complication I would see if your child is still on pain medication by the time the flight comes around maybe ask a doctor about that part.

I broke my leg before and after one 6 hour flight my leg was quite sore on landing which I had not anticipated happening, this was around 7 years after I had broken it.I expect it was because I still have a rod and screws in it.

I hope ye get to go and enjoy and I wish your child a full swift recovery.

where you in a cast? They split my cast before I flew with a broken leg, as your leg will swell in the plane and if the cast is tight it will be painful

I actually forgot to mention I was not in a cast and it was about 5 years after the leg break so I was very unsure as to the sudden pain which I had not felt flying before since I broke it.can only imagine it was 6/7 hours at altitude that caused it.

I fractured my foot about 15 years ago, last few months it's started hurting occasionally when I'm walking. Haven't got it checked out yet & may not be related but I don't remember doing anything to it that could have caused it.

Was back in the hospital to get the cast changed. Doctor has said she won't be ready for the holiday. She's in a full leg cast & not to walk on it or get it wet so we'll be cancelling the holiday. They'll take this cast offin 3 weeks & he said maybe then she'll be OK but definitely not before we go.

Better to cancel & book again when she's fit & able for it.

That's a shame but at least you can rebook the holiday. I had to cancel and rebook our family holiday to Florida when I fractured my ankle and only got the cast off the day before we were due to travel. No way would I have been able to go just after having the cast removed, it took me months to learn to walk without a limp again.

My family faced a similar thing once. If the cast is off and she feels up to it, maybe a nearby getaway could work. But honestly, trust your instincts and what's best for her. Wishing her a speedy recovery and whatever decision you make, I hope it brings some relief for you all.
