A request to action camera users

I was hoping to appeal to those of you with action cameras (garmin virb, gopro, insta360, an so on) to consider helping improve OpenStreetMap by uploading your recorded cycles.

I am not sure if you have considered it much but OpenStreetMap is used a lot in various tools used for us from our bike computers to route planning (strava, komoot and much more). OpenStreetMap us updated by anyone who wants to which can mean depending on the area if can be really well mapped or in other cases very lacking.

If your cycles are being recorded they can be uploaded to one of a few website which can take the recordings and overlay them on OpenStreetMap and this can then be used by anyone in Ireland or wider a field to update OpenStreetMap without the need to physically visit a location.

Updates can be beneficial to us for example we can record

    • surface type and quality of roads or trails, which is great for route planning on komoot or strava
    • bike paths and if they are segregated
    • locations of cafes
    • public water sources
    • repair stands
    • bicycle parking (capacity, stand time, covered or not)
    • CCTV in relation to bike parking

If you'd be interested in sharing recorded rides or just see how it works the three main places at the moment that they can be uploaded to are

    • Mapillary https://www.mapillary.com/
    • Kartaview https://kartaview.org/
    • Panoramax https://panoramax.fr/

Interesting. I don't record my rides, but I'm interested in the results.

Does this mean that we should be able to get street views of paths and trails that the Google maps vans don't capture?

Yes so in and of there selves, mapillary, kartaview and Panoramax are all Street View alternatives with varying levels of more permissive licensing. As they are user submitted you might find that a lot of areas are not covered (yet), unlike google paying people to drive around.

As a result of the licensing they are compatible with the openstreetmap licensing and any information you can see in those images can be added to the OSM map. Conversley you can not use Street View for updating openstreetmap as google would see this as theft of copyrighted data.

    \*boop\*

A refresh of this, now that garmin 1050 and hopefully lesser models will have surface info, getting video orphoto recorded rides into Mapillary or Kartaview will help improve the maps for everyone 😊

Do these services require you to use their app to record the video?

Or can you upload from a camera?

I've not uploaded imagery, but I've been it being done - multiple cameras connected to smart phones (or laptops) via Wi-Fi and taking photos every X seconds, the imagery was then uploaded at home. I don't think there is a need to use an app - any geo-located photo or set of photos (more common) can be uploaded. I've only ever used still photos or 360-degree panoramas - I've not seen videos uploaded. It may be useful to have a separate camera or smart phone for taking pictures of specific objects, e.g. signs with lots of writing, street nameplates, plaques, business plates, menus, etc.

The current services available to OpenStreetMap users in Ireland are:

    • Mapillary
    • KartaView
    • Mapilio

Bing Streetside is also available, but I don't think the public can upload imagery. All the imagery seems to have been taken by TomTom.

Mapiliarry has a Windows app for uploading.

Panoramax documentation seems to be in French.

Kartaview seems to be IOS/Android app only.

Has anyone actually done any of these uploads?

You have the choice of their app to record the data and upload in one go, or just something like a gopro with gps syncing and then upload using a companion app from one of the 3rd parties.

Once upload they'll process the images and remove faces and licence plates and I think information like telephone numbers on signs

Thanks, the requirement for GPS syncing would rule me out, though I understand why it's necessary.
