Cutting 20mm black polished granite fireplace surround

anyone ever cut 20mm granite in place? wanting to reduce the height of a granite fireplace but around 8 inches or so… but would require a tidy cut of a two 20mm granite "tiles"..

wondering can it be done in place or best to try and get the surrounds away from the fireplace and get them cut on a table..

former would save a bit of time if doable

I have done a very tidy cut of marble tiles in situ using an angle-grinder and diamond blade, but I had an optimal body position and I took my time. So yes, can be done, but all depends on how brave you are. Granite is harder than marble, which was almost like cutting soap… so that will make it more difficult than my job in reality. I'd prefer to use a sliding rig to maintain a straight line if I was doing it myself.

You can get hand-held circular saws with 85mm diamond blades, that might do the job pretty well as you can run it along a piece of wood to keep the line straight.
