Is Athy a nice area to live?

Looking for some insight into Athy as an area, lots of the discussions on here give the impression that it is a dive and quite rough (many of these threads are 10+ years old) without much context as to why that is the case.

There seem to be a lot of houses for sale in the Dunn Brinn area which at face value may be bad but there are houses for sale everywhere so can't read into that too much.

Prices are half those of Dublin and transport from the town to Dublin seem good with the train and new road built outside of the town, it would be great to hear from anyone from the town or with experience of the town to get a little more context.
