NCT had one small fail - help!

Hi,

Had the NCT this morning; one fail. A small little hole on the right wing above the wheel. He said if I can fill with some filler/hardener by this evening, he'll pass me but I don't have a clue how to do this. Any advice please? Is it difficult? What do I need to get? I'm near a Woodies and Halfords.

Here you go! I'm going to see if I can get the rest of the rust work done by a bodyshop but for the moment if I could just patch that hole it would save me a few quid :)

Go into Halfords and ask them, they're the professionals.

They may actually do it for you too

Can you pull down the plastic internal wing liner to get access to rear of hole? Maybe a clip or screw to remove close to the area.

As mentioned above they have it in Lidl at the moment for 4 euro and it's literally a simple little job. The tester won't be looking for a good cosmetic finish he just wants to tick the box that says the hole is gone.

Hi all. Thanks for the replies.

Well I went to Halfords, spoke to a very decent guy who said he'd do the job for me, I brought it round the back, went for a coffee and an hour later I had the job done very well and painted. He even found me a new wing online when local body shops couldn't source one for me. All in €50. Got the NCT sorted after, so I'm very happy 😁 first time in Halfords and I'm very impressed but I think I was lucky to meet the guy I met and he said he was only doing it because it was kinda quiet and he had experience of doing bodywork himself. Anyways all's well that ends well. Cheers to sydthebeat for the suggestion!

It seems pretty harsh to me to fail a car on a relatively minor cosmetic detail that has no effect on mechanical function or safety.

Bargain for €50. The NCT guy must have been stunned you got it filled and painted in a few hours on a Saturday!

On the topic of diy repairs. Would the Lidl 2k plastic filler be ok for this bumper repair (not that deep) or should I get bumper filler at Vinny Byrne when getting the paint ?

Probably more the case in case someone walks up against it and gets cut from it than anything functional. Although if something was to get very rusted, then bits might come off when driving and hit someone either

To the best of my knowledge they have always failed on sharp edges.

Its the potential of somebody brushing against it and hurting themselves, this is what an NCT tester told me before, even something like a bumper that has a split in is can be judged to be a fail if there is a sharp edge.

His advice on this sort of thing is to use something like duct tape so that there is no exposed edge.

Had the same thing myself ,I replaced the wing then next wing failed for rust ,then the cills were failed for rust ,spent a lot getting it welded, mechanic said they'll find rust underneath every time to fail it at nct, so gave up and traded it in ,unless it's future classic not worth the hassle and money .
