HI there, I'm guessing this might not be the right place to post this but I couldn't find a way to post an entire new sports section. Any CFL fans in here? Which team do you support if yes?

    Me - Montreal Alouettes.

Grey Cup 2023 was an unforgettable experience! Look forward to the new season.

    Any thoughts?

I've tried watching it a few times but could never stick it.

This may sound glib but there is too much advertising on the field, it's actually hard on the eyes.

I happened to be in Montreal for the weekend of the Grey Cup back in 2001.

It was lively enough but not as lively as a F1 weekend there, but then again one is June the other November.

CFL was popular among football fans in the 80s when Screensport showed 2 x games per week.

It doesn’t have a broadcaster here any more unfortunately, it was on BT Sport for a long time when they were affliated with ESPN but they severed ties with ESPN last year and since then Sky have done a much narrower deal which seems to only cover NCAA football and basketball.

You can stream games on the CFL website (not geoblocked in Ireland) but it’s hard work (they could have made it easier tbh).

As for the sport itself, it’s enjoyable on its own terms, it is about 80% the same as American football, but the differences (larger field, 3 downs instead of 4, extra player, unlimited movement in the backfield, different clock rules and the “rouge” scoring play being the main ones) do throw you if you are not familiar with them.

I meant to mention but an unfortunate thing about the new CFL TV setup is that nearly all games are now in Canadian/US prime time making it too late for most of us to watch - I don’t think there’s a daytime game until Labour Day (in September) although there are a few after that. By then of course the US season has started and all eyes have turned there.
