Rolex Servicing

    Hi all,

I've a GMT II 116710ln which I previously had serviced by Rolex in London as I used to be over and back a lot but those days are gone and with Brexit complications I'm minded to have the watch serviced locally.

Are there specialist independents who are well regarded or do I just have to bite the bullet and drop it into Weirs who (I assume) will likely just ship it over and back to London anyway and charge me a hefty handling fee for the pleasure?

weirs will do exactly that and if it was me i would rather take a trip and drop it to london and have a day out, i got return tickets for thirty euro last week because i booked in advance

Yeah, the snag is it requires 2 days, one to drop off and one to collect. Regardless of how cheap the flights are the airport hassle and 2 days time just aren't worth it for me, especially as I loved in London for a few years so the idea of hanging around for a few hours before heading back to the airport again isn't something I'd like to do.

A friend recommended Dawson St Jewellers as an independent (repaired / service onsite) option which I might go with. I know that'll break the Rolex pedigree with the watch but I can live with that so long as the service is to a high standard and that seems to be what they offer - https://www.dawsonjewellers.ie/s-projects-side-by-side

if you are going to go local why not try chris and ichrono he seems to do a decent job

Wasn't aware of ichrono. Will bear in mind for future requirements but will likely go with the personal recommendation for Dawson's who seem very well established.

Dawsons are very good .Can be expensive but I'd pay the little bit extra for the convenience of them

I though because Weirs have the boutique now upstairs they had to get a service department inhouse as the requirements? Last time I bought there Marko was saying that they would have the service department inhouse for it anyway

I'm pretty sure I trained with one of the watchmakers in Dawson Jewellers, and she worked in Roles Bexley. Another lad I trained with is out on his own now, having spent many years in Weirs. Fully Rolex certified, so has full access to parts etc. I can get contact details if you'd like?

Hi Chuck, no harm putting up your contacts details for future reference or others looking at non London / Weirs servicing of their Rolex's.

Given the volume of Rolex's there must be on the island of Ireland in surprised someone hasn't really established themselves as the go to trusted independent service and repair specialist focused solely on Rolex's with Rolex trained staff working to Rolex approved standards etc

What is the secret to getting a Submariner from Weirs?

wait another year for the last of the heat to leave the market id say should be easy enough then. Most models bar the sub and daytona are now under retail again on the secondary market

How much does a Rolex service cost?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,470 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

in the UK £800 if you are going back to rolex i believe https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=187&t=2071519

    Indy cheaper obviously.

A chrono or complicated watch will be more.

I've a 1967 Omega Seamaster of my dad's. It doesn't work but is gorgeous. I brought it to Weir's who sent it to London for 50e. It came back that they were unable to do anything as it was too old. Any advice? I love it and want to wear it.

If it went to Omega and they couldn't do anything with it, at all? I'd query if the movement itself was beyond economic repair. Now that may well be true, but I've learned that where sentiment and history apply? Economics is often moot.

Was there any docket or paperwork returned with the watch outlining issues?

I know that in the UK there a few well regarded watchsmiths for vintage Omega's. In Ireland, I've used John Donohoe at https://vintagewatchrepair.ie/ for servicing of a few modern pieces and his website does mention vintage repair & restoration.

If it's a movement replacement or in need of hard to find or out of production parts? It could well end up costing far more than the monetary value of the watch.

Thanks for the info- I'll look into it. It, along with a Tudor were my Dad's and I'd love to wear them in memory of him as there's not much left (house cleared out and sold etc). You know yourself....

Is there an official age limit where Rolex will no longer service or repair a watch? I was previously under the impression they would repair any age watch, at a cost. I have a 1930s Rolex which is not in great condition. If they cannot repair a 1967 watch, I assume there is no hope with a watch 30 years older.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

The watch mentioned was an omega, not a Rolex.
