Adult Strabismus Surgery - Adjustable Sutures?

    Hi all,

I’m very new to Boards.ie but thought was worth a shot if anyone on here has had strabismus surgery?

I had a consultation today, and was told I would have a slight risk of double vision after the surgery. The consultant advised he would use adjustable sutures to adjust the eye after surgery to help the double vision if needed.

Has anyone had this surgery and was told/ had the same consultation as me?

I’m just wondering is this a big risk? The consultant didn’t think so and thinks the surgery will be worth it - but I mean the thought of double vision does scare me!

Any help or advise is very much appreciated.

    thanks!

    Hi,

Yes I had strabismus surgery twice. Once in 2022 and once in 2023. The reason i had this surgery was to correct double vision that i developed around 2015. In the interim period between developing double vision and having the surgery my glasses prescription corrected my double vision. For myself the purpose of the surgery was to correct my double vision so that it would allow me to wear regular prescription glasses and contact lenses again. The first surgery in 2022 it was a success for a few weeks only. The double vision returned and I was booked in for a second surgery a year later. The second surgery was a success and I have no double vision now since early 2023. The surgery itself was hassle free, my eye was patched up for one day after and was tender for about 3 days. My consultant informed me that most people require two surgeries before getting the result they want.

In terms of risk I would say it was quite low in terms of any permanent issues arising from it.

I've had this surgery, no double vision.

I went in once, was under / asleep for the first part of the procedure. I was awake for the second part where they further adjusted.

It's a complete unknowable as to whether you may suffer unexpected results, similar to laser eye. They have to tell you it can and does happen.

Couldn't be happier I did it as I was struggling with bouts of double vision before hand.
