School violence in France

A 15 year old boy has died at a hospital in France this afternoon after he was assaulted by a gang of thugs in a town about 20km from the South of Paris yesterday. He had died from cardiac arrest. He was assaulted when leaving school in the town of Viry-Chatillion on Thursday afternoon.

The school is located in a working class district of Viry-Chatillion. It has a population of 30,000 people.

No arrests have yet been made.

The public prosecutor's office in France has said that a murder and gang assault investigation had been opened by French police since the attack took place outside the school.

Separately; a teenage girl was attacked a group of people outside her school in Montpellier on Tuesday.

One of her three accused attackers; who was arrested on of suspicion of attempted murder of a minor, is a girl who is from the same school.

There has been dozens of threats being made to other schools around France in recent days.

Have those threats being sent to schools located in working class areas only or do they sent to middle or upper class areas of France as well. Who would be the main instigators in sending threats to them. Would there a high possibility that these attacks were from groups who were located in these schools. Or are they are coming from groups of violent adults who have links to these schools.

I haven't heard about the first one, but the second one is apparently a girl from a Muslim family but who doesn't wear a veil (outside school, as the veil is banned in French schools). It seems she was being bullied for months by other Muslim pupils who called her a Kafir, miscreant and even a prostitute because she doesn't wear the veil.

It’s not limited to working class areas, and there aren’t really any main instigators of it, just various extremist groups with their own political ideological beliefs, and young people who are willing to escalate violence against other people who don’t share their beliefs.

It would depend on the exact wording of the law. If it works by protecting specific groups deemed to be vulnerable (eg Jews, gender identity etc) then a non believer is probably not going to be one of them.

It's one of the problems with the new Scottish law: I saw someone being interviewed defending the law who had to admit that if a trans woman was abused, they'd be protected by the law only if the attacker knew he was insulting a biological male. If he believed he was insulting a woman, there's nothing in the law to protect her.

But more importantly, this is not about being offensive, it's about beating someone up and putting them in a coma. I'm pretty sure there's a law that deals with that.

In France? Where they take the idea of secularism seriously enough to prohibit Muslim women from wearing traditional headwear in public spaces? Religion as a protected characteristic protects both religious and non-religious from prejudice and discrimination.

The difference in the case you’re referring to though is that it’s complicated by the fact that both the victim, and the perpetrators are Muslim, with the perpetrators having made her life hell because they felt she wasn’t adhering to their ideas of what it means to be a Muslim.

I agree with you though - whether or not it constitutes a hate crime, it’s the French authorities should have dealt with it, but when the authorities themselves are prejudiced against Muslims in France, and Muslims are all too familiar with being on the receiving end of that prejudice, it makes it that much more difficult and unlikely for them to feel able to make a complaint.
