Most if not all SD channels with be gone by August 2024 as Sky are also going ahead shutting down the DVBs system in favour of the new DVBs2 system, So only mostly HD will be on. By then RTE ONE will be in HD in the north of Ireland, if not well before it.

A post on DS has said that RTÉ One HD is now available via Other Channels for Sky Subscribers in NI.

    The frequency is 12226 H DVB-S2 8PSK 27500 2/3

As Sky handle the uplinking and transponder capacity for all of the Irish channels, and the HD variants are provided by default in ROI, I imagine they'll all be HD-only by August.

It was probably felt converting TG4 to HD-only first was the least likely to cause complaints amongst anyone with an SD box - although at this stage they'll already have lost all of the BBC channels.

What's special about August, in this regard?

Sky will have moved all of their own broadcast channels to DVB-S2 transponders by August, joining the BBC and ITV in no longer being available on UK SD boxes.

Their plan alongside this appears to be that any channel available in HD by default (i.e. it doesn't require the specific HD pack add-on) will also cease to simulcast in SD at that point:

    • Sky Mix which was recently launched has no SD simulcast and is available in HD to everyone
    • Most of the Sky Cinema SD simulcasts have already ceased as HD has been included by default both here and in the UK for a number of years
    • Sky Sports is a bit different in that the UK gets it in HD by default, whereas Ireland still requires the HD pack add-on - given Sky Sports Tennis only launched an Irish SD simulcast would suggest they will cease simulcasting of the UK version of these channels but will continue simulcasting them in SD for subscribers here without the HD add-on but on DVB-S2 transponders
    • The HD variant of RTÉ One is now clearing on NI subscriber cards in recent days suggesting it's going to replace RTÉ One SD for subscribers there.

For us in Ireland, they're not going to continue to simulcast RTÉ and Virgin Media channels - the carriage costs which are covered entirely by Sky themselves - when they're already available in HD by default anyway.

More SD channels going mainly sports and movies but not in ROI though because I'd say they are still charging us that 10 euro for HD channels.
