I am looking for three golfers who would like to play Druids Glen tomorrow at 2pm. Green fees are taken care of. (I have five golfers and need three more to make up the two tee times 2pm/2.10pm.)

If more than 3 people respond I'll do a random pick at 10pm tonight.

Hope some of you can make it.

I'd be available Kevin, have played it a few times before the renovations, would love to see in person what changes they've made!

My brother is a member of druids heath and lives nearby. I could check if he is interested if you don't get enough Boardies to take up the offer

Hi Kevin, I'd be able to make it if you've got room. Thanks!

Thanks for the responses. Great that you guys can make it. Xander, if you could ask your brother and let me know that would be much appreciated.

See you tomorrow. Going to be windy but we should stay dry…

    how were the greens ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭Kevinmarkham

They were acceptable putting surfaces but not of the standard that Druids would want. I played Portmarnock a week ago and their greens weren't in the best of shape either.

You can see how hard the winter has hit them. I don't know how long it takes for new greens like this to bed in but you get the impression that this much rain is a set-back.

No dramas Kevin, hope you all had an enjoyable round !

Just going back on this old thread. I was thinking of making the trip up from Cork to play Druids Glen, is it worth it?

From what I can see it's €120 green fee for Golf Ireland members. Is it worth that? I don't think they do any open days or scratch cup.

Also would druids heath be worth a game and make 2 days out of it.

Rare I would say this over 100 euro...but yes it is worth it

In fact considering most of these places buisness models..I'm surprised you are getting it for that

Druids Heath is a nice enough course but IMO it is not worth the 75 euro green fee. It has nothing that made me feel it was worth the premium price.

For that money you could play Powerscourt instead on the second day.

IMHO a no, Macreddin, Carlow, Bunclody or the Powercourts offer better value and I would prefer the first two as better golfing courses. If you want linksy feel then Arklow a good option also…

Thanks for tips lads. I'm definitely going to try do some 2 day trip, a couple of courses that have open singles on consecutive days might also be a good option as in general the entry fee is cheaper than a green fee. Plus I don't mind sticking my name on a line and playing with a couple of strangers

Was looking there , could do open singles in Bunclody on a Wednesday for €50 and Carlow on a Thursday for €30. That might be a plan that would suit me good

Two great courses and not €195 (if doing a Druids double)….

Druids vs those 2 courses is a bit of an odd comparison.

I mean, Bunclody and Carlow are both nice courses but they're nothing different to what you'll have around you in Cork.

If you're just making a trip cause you fancy a golf weekend, they're good. If you're looking to travel to play somewhere you will always remember and chat to your mates about, they're not that.

Druids a very different level...and good value at that price...in current market...

Druids sort of top 20 in Ireland...and look up prices for top 20...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

I dunno, I really love Bunclody, the drive in is marvellous, feels like you are arriving somewhere special.

Maybe I find it hard to separate price from value, but I would say Bunclody is possibly the best value course in Ireland.

I've played Druid's Glen around 4 times, probably haven't played it in absolute peak condition, but I wouldn't be rushing back, certainly not for €200 plus, at €125 it's a bit more interesting alright.

I played Druids Glen for the first time back in April. Didn't get the hype. No great desire to return at the price point they are currently operating at.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,235 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Exactly, just because courses have gone crazy in price increases the last year or two does not mean they have improved or even if they are worth it in the first place. Fair dues to courses in NI where daft increases are rare on parkland courses.

Always thought DG and Mount Juliet very overrated, it's not they are bad courses or anything like that, just overrated and not up to expectations.

I'd put Slieve Russell/Headfort New as better courses

    all subjective

I wouldn’t put this 2 courses in the same league as Druids or MJ

I think some people are suffering from having played Druids Glen too often and too cheaply.

The changes have improved the course imo , yes it hasn't always been in perfect conditions. Is improved now...

But there are so many holes and in particular the par 3s are simply stunning golf holes.

12 and 13 are worth the trip alone...13 is one of the best holes in Ireland and in particular best parkland holes..

And whilst I would be one who would always consider price for a round. It can't be the only consideration. People here who have played Druids Glen multiple times ,suggestion it isn't worth while playing are misguiding people. There are only a handful of parkland courses in all of Ireland in same category...

You will always get to play likes of Carlow or Bunclody or the courses up the North ...but Druids Glen has held multiple tournaments, it has an an unusual topology for a parkland and has stunning flowers, variety of trees and water features and walled gardens. A river crossing. Yes there are other courses in Ireland close to this, that are cheaper.

But , if you are into your playing the great Irish courses , it would be kinda sad if you don't play Druids at least once.

But looking for pure value for money , is a very different exercise...

I have played Druids Glen before and after the renovation. Probably my new favourite course and while I still have wide gaps I played a good number of the 'big' parklands over the years.

AFAIK they have an open once a month for €120. They had last year anyway. And its worth that to me once or twice a year.

I second Bunclody, love that course, stunner really. Played it on Monday for €40 - unbelievable.
