New Car Insurance Question

I am looking to get a new car shortly. Was thinking of putting down deposit this week. Insurance on my current car runs until May 20th. My girlfriend is a named driver on it and she is waiting to do her test which will probably be in June sometime.

If I insure the new car this week, I can't use any of my no claims bonus because they are on the current car. Got a quote for the new car and its very high.

Just wondering what the best option here is?

Wait until you get your new car and change over your current policy to it.

Just transfer your existing policy over to the new car when you collect it and let it run until May 20th when the policy expires. Then shop around for a new cheaper policy elsewhere like you do every year.

How easy is it to change over the policy though especially when the new car is a higher value than the old one?

Its easy enough. Over the phone. They re-calculate and you just pay the balance….

A phone call to your insurer should be quick enough. Or their online policy amendment.

Very easy, your insurer can give you an updated quote over the phone. They will charge an admin fee to change, somewhere in the region of €75 or so.

Have you called your insurer and got a quote?

The value of the car doesn't guarantee the premium will be higher. If you go from a 2008 to 2020 I would put money on the insurance cost being lower even if the car is 5X in value.

I recently changed cars with Liberty and the insurance had 1 day to run. They sent out new docs and everything for that 1 day lol. But in terms of hassle it wasn't really a big deal. The next years worth of policy kicked in at midnight etc. Give your insurer a call.

Are you trading in your existing car? If so you will have to ring your insurance company. They can do the permanent transfer to the new car over the phone or some can allow you to do online via their app. They will ask you for the new car's reg and may also ask you for it's current market value if their system doesn't tell them. They will then come back with the amount if there is an increase in the premium for the remainder of the policy. Some charge an admin fee to do the transfer also

One thing to note is if you are arranging to collect the car then contact your insurance company in advance of that, telling them you want to transfer it over to the new car on a specific day and time when you are collecting it. Don't wait until your at the dealership as the insurance company may not be reachable to do the transfer on the spot if it's on a weekend. Generally insurance companies only operate accident emergency hotlines outside of normal business hours. The admin stuff is only handled during normal business hours.

If you want an idea of the cost to change over the policy today then give them a ring with the reg, tell them you are thinking of buying the car and just want to get an idea of how much it would cost to transfer it for the remainder of the policy.

No I am not trading in the old car. I was hoping to hold onto it at least until herself had passed the test. That was until I realised I couldn't use my no claims bonus on two policies. That why Im now trying to figure out the best way for ward.

Oh then that changes things. I presumed you were just trading in your existing car for the new one. Disregard what I suggested earlier then.

Could your wife get her own insurance and put you down as named driver, if you intend to hang onto the old car for any length of time?

Looks like you'll be starting a new policy in your own name.Start with calling your existing insurer for a quote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭coil1985

She's still on a provisional so it would cost a fortune I imagine.

I got quoted 86 to change over the policy to the new car. So I might do that and then take get insurance for the old car myself (will have no no claims bonus on old car) for six months and put herself down as named driver. That should cover her until the test is done. Sounds good idea in my head at the moment anyway.

Now you need new policy to cover the older car with the girlfriend as the main driver.Getting complicated. You would have to be the main driver on one policy(new car) and a named driver on another policy(existing car)or a variation of that as far as I know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭coil1985

Ah, can't be main driver on two policies? Ok, well I will have to get some quotes for the old car anyway.

Gf as named driver on new car might(not always I mean)lower the cost. Then herself as main driver ,you named on older car.Full licence will drop the cost.Get your girlfriend to call her insurance as soon as she passes.A pro rata deduction is given-maybe a refund on both policies

Thanks, no point insuring her on new car though. Its automatic. Old is manual and she (for some reason) wanted to learn manual and do the test in manual. Otherwise the car wouldn't be kept at all.

You can be the main driver on as many policies as you want but you can only use your no claims bonus on one of the policies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭coil1985

ye thats the plan then like I mentioned above. Will work out cheaper than what I was quoted this morning for new car with no no claims bonus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,764 ✭✭✭cml387

If your wife is the main driver of the older car, then she needs insurance in her name. Guaranteed if an insurance company sees two insurance policies with you as main driver on both and wife as named driver they will figure that the wife is the main driver and that you made a false declaration. Known as "fronting" and very much frowned on.

Doesn't matter if it's a husband or wife as the main driver on a policy as married couples own everything together. OPs problem is that it's his girl friend so she needs her own policy on the old car or he's fronting.
