Is the car used to carry children by any chance? I had an Auris as a rental car one time where the CD player didn't work.
I poked around with it a bit and fished out a piece of paper that had been stuffed in there, I'm guessing by a young 'un.
CD player worked fine after that.

Do you mean that when you put a cd in it spits it out again? Does the cd go the whole way in, can you hear it try to read it before spitting it out again? Did you try different cds or just the one? Some cd players also don't like a particular type of cd format. For example a recordable cd and will only play original cds rather than one with content you created on the cd yourself. Would depend on the age of the car.

Also there maybe a tiny reset button on the front of the player. You might have to use a pin or needle to press it in for a minute or two to reset the cd player and then try inserting the cd again.

The motor that pulls it in and pushes it out could be gone.
