NCT - Temp Gauge busted, will they test?

    Hi,

We've an 05 Saab 93 wagon that we use a spare/backup/utilitarian workhorse. Recently the temp gauge in the instrument cluster has gone haywire (bit of a known issue with these), and it reads high. Its at the 8 O'Clock position when off. I changed thermostat, housing and sensor, no leaks anywhere, fans kick in fine, oil and coolant both clean and monitor the live temp on my phone with an ELM dongle and that says temp is fine....so I'm confident it is the cluster.

Anyway I need to test it, if I bring it in I'm assuming the tester is going to refuse as it looks like it's about to boil over and would be in no position to do the emissions test... would the tester even entertain looking at the live data on my phone and trusting that and running it through?

    Ta

Many cars have no temperature gauge at all so having one that gives an inaccurate reading should not be an issue. The temperature of the oil and exhaust emissions is what they measure in the NCT. A faulty gauge will have no bearing on that if your engine is in healthy condition overall.

Just put tape over the temp gauge

Good point. I had forgotten that the oil temp is on the result sheet, so they obviously have a more accurate way of reading temps etc.
