Up until July of 2023, I was working in a freelance capacity. I began a new contracted civil service job in August, which deducts my tax automatically from my pay cheques via PAYE. I de-registered for self-assessment for the period from July 31st 2023. However, when attempting to complete my form 11 for 2023, which should only require tax payment for my freelance earnings from January to July, it asks for payment of taxes on my earnings from August to December, even though my taxes for those earnings have been paid via PAYE. Does anyone know how I avoid being charged for tax that has already been paid? Many thanks.

All income from all sources for the year goes into a Form 11 or Form 12.

Is the online form pre-populated with the PAYE paid?

The Form 11 you file for the calendar year covers both your employments. In the "Final Liability" section, you will see the amounts already deducted under PAYE (tax, USC), these are subtracted from your total.

Basically, they add up your income from both employments, calculate how much tax and USC you were supposed to pay for the whole year, deduct what you already paid, and come up with a difference. If it's an "overpayment", you will get a refund. Otherwise, they will expect payment through ROS.
